Synopsis: "David Williams shows how classic Great War literature, including work by Remarque, Owen, Sassoon, and Harrison, was symptomatic of a cultural crisis brought on by the advent of cinema. He argues that images from Geoffrey Malins' hugely popular war film The Battle of the Somme (1916) collapsed social, temporal, and spatial boundaries, giving film a new cultural legitimacy, while the appearance of writings based on cinematic forms of remembering marked a crucial transition from a verbal to a visual culture. By contrast, today's digital media are…

Description:
London: Henry Frowde and Hodder & Stoughton, 1916. Hardcover. Good. The book supplied neither the publishing date nor the names of author or illustrator, so the 1917 date and identification of Charles Robinson as illustrator come from the British Library entry for this work. The book is complete, but has many condition problems. The front cover is bright, with edgewear and rounded corners and handling. The back cover also has water stains. This is a cutaway book, with an opening in the front cover to show an illustration on the title page. The opening has one chip of paper missing from the top edge. The 'belongs to' box on the inside of the front cover has been completed (dated December 25th/17). The paper on the title page has darkened, particularly where the cutawy exposed the paper to air. Excluding the title page, the book has 31 unnumbered pages, including four full-page colour illustrations, and many smaller black and white ones within the text. The paper covering the back hinge,…
