Description:
Chichester, Sussex: Phillimore, 1990. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is price clipped. 167 illustrations and map endpapers. Seaford is a paradox. It is a town by the sea but not really a seaside town. Lying on the coast between Brighton and Eastbourne, it was a prosperous Cinque Port and a Parliamentary constituency six centuries before the patronage of the Prince Regent and the Duke of Devonshire led to the development of the little villages of Brighthelmstone and Bourne into sophisticated resorts. Seaford's aristocratic patrons were the Pelhams and when the Duke of Newcastle used the town as one of his pocket boroughs in the 18th century his patronage was in the form of 'jobs for the boys' in return for votes at the election. This ancient port, parish, town and borough has seen days of greater importance and, at times, made its rough and rumbustious mark upon history, as this book reveals. 13. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Near Fine. 4to - over 9¾"…

Description:
London: Jonathan Cape, 1984. A Fine unmarked copy with VG dustjacket which is not price clipped. xii + 172 pages. 20 illustrations. 28 plates. This richly entertaining book celebrates the 50th anniversary, in 1984, of the founding of Glyndebourne Festival Opera. It is a splendid mixture of historical survey, personal anecdote, criticism and comedy. Above all, emanating from every piece is a genuine affection for Glyndebourne and its founder John Christie, admiration for its style and musical standards, gratitude for opportunities given to artists, conductors, designers and audiences, for musical experiences and pleasure, and sheer delight - a recurring refrain of the book - in the atmosphere of the place. EMI Records advertisement for Glyndebourne Festival Opera 1934-1959 - memories of the first 25 years, HMV Record - is loosely inserted. 14. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

London: Geoffrey Bles, 1968. A Near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from a small marks to fore and lower edges) with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. xiii + 303 pages. 16 illustrations. 2 page genealogical chart. John Christie (1882-1962) was an English landowner and producer. He was the founder of the Glyndebourne Opera House and the Glyndebourne Festival Opera at his home at Glyndebourne, near Lewes in Sussex in 1934. An only child, he was sent to Eton, where he later returned as a member of the Science staff. His 16 years as a schoolmaster were interrupted by two years of active service in the First World War, when he won a Military Cross.
