Description:
London: Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1999. A Fine copy ) with near Fine dustjacket which is price clipped. An oblong format volume of 160 pages. Colour photographs throughout. Despite Henry VIII's decade of architectural destruction during the Dissolution, Britain has hundreds of surviving examples of monastic buildings, varying in size and scale from forlorn and crumbling fragments to the well-preserved majestic ruins such as Fountains, Lindisfarne, Glastonbury and Tintern. In addition, some of Britain's finest churches and cathedrals are monastic in origin, ehibiting the stunning craftsmanship associated with Romanesque and early medieval religious architecture. Complementing Derry Brabb's superb photography, his text examines the history of the monasteries. 2. First. Hard Cover. Fine/Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Internally there is foxing to fore edge, a name and date to front endpaper else clean, tight and unmarked. Dustjacket has a small repaired closed tear and light wear to edges. xiii + 436 pages. 23 half-tone illustrations. Over a million and a quarter people lead the monastic and other forms of the religious life in the Western world - Benedictines, Trappists, Franciscans, Dominicans, Jesuits and members of many other orders and institutes. Their lives are still largely based on St. Augustine's doctrine of perfection, still regulated for the most part by a medieval timetable. For a Cistercian nun this means that the day begins when a bell rings in her dormitory at 2.45 a.m. to summon her to the Night Office. Oxford: Lion, 2000. A Fine unmarked copy with Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. First UK edition. The author has been widely praised for the highly engaging way in which she enables readers of all beliefs and none to join her exploration of the nature of faith. The book is an entertaining blend of history, theology, story, etymology and memoir, the story of her gradual conversion through her accommodation of, and reconciliation with, the vocabulary of Christian faith. Her spiritual world is one rooted firmly in the mess of daily living, a world sure to be familiar to all, but it also reveals the richness of an ancient tradition that continues to evolve. **** NOT EX LIB **** R1. London: The Connoisseur/Michael Joseph, 1967. A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from dust marking to top edge) with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. 120 pages. 8 colour plates. 75 illustrations. The book reflects the variations of an art form that has developed stylistically from Pre-Reformation times to the present day. Despite the Dissolution of the Monasteries and the ravages of time, an enormous number of churches in Britain still own exceptionally fine plate. The author traces the evolution of Anglican plate from the 9th century Trewhiddle Chalice, the earliest extant piece of plate, through the secular designs of the Post-Reformation era and the 19th century Tractarian restoration of Pre-Reformation shapes to the simple and functional contemporary objects. Therese de Lisieux (1873-1897) was born into a devout Catholic home in France. From early childhood she wanted to become a nun and at the age of 15 she entered the Carmelite convent at Lisieux, where two of her sisters were already nuns.
