With woodcut printer's device of Westheimer on verso of final leaf.8vo. 16th- or 17th-century vellum with yapp edges, spine with later lettering in gothic script. Text in Latin, with a few passages in Greek. Basel, Bartholomeus Westheimer, August 1543. Third Edition. (First printed in 1541). A fascinating collection of Renaissance jokes, funny and instructive stories, anecdotes and witty aphorisms, arranged in alphabetical order, compiled by Johann Gast, a Swiss protestant theologian.
Convivialium sermonum liber ("Book of Table Talk") is the first of the big 16th-century joke anthologies. The first edition contains 400 jokes and the number increased greatly in later editions. Many of the anecdotes have been borrowed verbatim by Gast from Bebel, Luscinius, and Poggio, however some are original to this compilation and presented as being Gast's own life experiences. Perhaps the longest story in the book… Read More

The definitive edition of Bale's work. 56 leaves (112 pages) longer than the 1551 edition. STC 1274. Bale's Englysh votaryes established the received history of the English church and Reformation, including the notions that the English church was the purest of the early Christian churches, and that the entire history of England could be understood as s battle against the influence of the Roman Catholic Church. Bale's anti-Catholic chronicle, full of salacious accounts of medieval English clergy, had a decisive influence on John Foxe and his Book of Martyrs. Description:
8vo. ½ calf over marbled boards; spines with five raised bands, 2 black morocco labels, gilt lettered; leaf edges red speckled. London: Published by the Author. 1829. 2 volumes. Although not a Catholic, Cobbett took up the cause of Catholic Emancipation. Between 1824 and 1826, he published his History of the Protestant Reformation, a broadside against the traditional Protestant historical narrative of the British reformation, stressing the lengthy and often bloody persecutions of Catholics in Britain and Ireland. At this time, Catholics were still forbidden to enter certain professions or to become members of Parliament. The law was no longer enforced, but it was still officially a crime to attend mass or build a Catholic church. Although the politician William Wilberforce also worked and spoke against discrimination against Catholics, Cobbett continued a strident and racist opposition to the noted reformer, particularly after Wilberforce published his Appeal in Behalf of the Negro Slaves in the… Read More

Hardcover. Fine. Tractat[us] de meditatio[n]e cordis Joh[ann]is Gerson. Illustrated with 4 xylographic foliated initials, the first colored. 8vo. Bound in 19th century vellum. Impressum Venetijs arte [et] impensis Bernardini de benalijs, 1488. Early Edition. Hain, 9095; Goff, I-17; Bodleian Lib. 15th cent., T-105; BM 15th cent., V, p. 372 (IA.22318). The Imitatio Christi, or Imitation of Christ is often considered the greatest of all Christian manuals of devotion. In the late 15th century there was some dispute as to the authorship of this work. The present edition mistakenly ascribes it to Johannis Gerson, a French scholar, educator, reformer, poet and chancellor of the University of Paris. It has, however, been proven that this work really was written by the German monk Thomas à Kempis. Attributed variously but now definitely ascribed to Thomas à Kempis. (Goff). The first edition of Kempis work, published in 1473, did not include the Imitatio Christi, as it was believed then that Kempis was not… Read More

1542. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. With woodcut initials on black grounds; printers device on title page and final page. Printed in Italic and Roman type.12mo. Modern ½-red morocco; spine with 5 raised bands, gilt lettering. Frankfort, Christian Egenolf (1542). First Edition. Christoph Imlerus Hadamarius was a Lutheran theologian at Frankfurt during the early decades of the Reformation, whose works were consulted and used by Henri Estienne, amongst others, and whose commentaries found their way into several editions of the Index Librorum Prohibitorum printed after 1550 (including that printed at Padua in 1580). The present work consists of an influential and controversial series of exegeses and meditations upon the Epistles of John, Jude and James. It is particularly noteworthy that Imler does not use the Latin Vulgate translation for his commentaries, but uses a Protestant Latin translation instead. Presumably, the Vulgate was too Catholic a translation. Binding slightly faded at top… Read More

8vo. 19th- century ½-vellum. Venice: (Damianus de Mediolano, de Gorgonzola) 16 Nov. 1493. (ISTC No.: ig00602500; H 8207; GW 11804). Guido de Monte Rochen's Manipulus curatorum is considered the most important of the medieval pastoral manuals. (It was not made obsolete until the Council of Trent in 1566.) It is especially important as a key example of the intersection of religious doctrine and practice. The author attempts to make centuries of theology and canon law comprehensible for the priest of little learning and, in turn, for his parishioners. No other work did this as successfully. Binding slightly bent; title page a bit dusty; a few leaves misnumbered in manuscript; o/w a fine copy with large margins of this rare incunable. No known copies in the United States.

Description:
Edited by Joseph Ibn Rai. 8vo. Leather-backed red cloth. Printed by Giovanni di Gara, Venice 1607. First Edition. Text in Hebrew. The Masorah provides the number of times a particular word appears in the Bible. In his Bible commentary, the great Medieval Jewish scholar Jacob ben Asher sought to expound the significance of this phenomenon. This present work provides further studies utilizing this approach, thus reaffirming Jacob ben Asher's earlier efforts. According to many, Jacob moved to Spain with his father. It is also said that Jacob succeeded his father as the rabbi of the Jewish community of Toledo (Zacuto), while others say his brother Judah ben Asher did so. His brothers were also rabbis of different communities in Spain. He lived in abject poverty most of his life, and according to the Sephardic Community of Chios, is said to have fallen ill and died with his 10 companions on the island of Chios, in Greece, while travelling. Venetiis, Johannes et Gregorius de Gregorii de Forlivio, February 16, 1492. First Incunabula Edition. Antonius de Vercelli was, for approximately thirty years, one of the leading and most influential political counsellors of the pre-eminent families in Italy's early Renaissance: the Medici family in Florence and the Sforza family in Milan. This collection of his Sermones (Discourses) has significant importance and the added weight of someone deeply involved in the political turmoil of the late 15th century. The context and political value of these discourses helped Machiavelli define "The Art of the State." Description:
COLERIDGE'S PROPOSAL FOR NATIONAL EDUCATION A polemic on the political divisions in English society, which put forth an important proposal for national education. Coleridge explored the necessary conditions for social stability – what he termed Permanence, as distinct from Progress, in a polity – stressing the importance of a shared public sense of community, and national education. It also contains his thoughts on the use of The Bible as a guide for political administration. Written as a reaction to the post-Waterloo depression in England, The Manual and was not particularly well received. It is, however, a useful tract for studying Coleridge's political and religious thoughts. Coleridge was a profound political thinker. He began his life as a political radical, and an enthusiast for the French Revolution; but over the years he developed a more conservative view of society, somewhat in the manner of Burke. He had a major influence on Ralph Waldo Emerson and on American Transcendentalism. Small… Read More

49. KIERKEGAARD, SOREN. Sygdommen til Doden En christelig psychologisk Udvikling til Opbyggelse og Opvaekkelse Af Anti-Climacus. (The Sickness Unto Death). 8vo. Contemporary ½-leather-backed black boards, gold lettering on spine. Copenhagen 1849. First Edition. This treatise on despair is one of Kierkegaard's most important works. According to Kierkegaard, an individual is "in despair" if he does not align himself with God or God's plan for the self. In this way he loses his self. Kierkegaard defines humanity as the tension between the "finite and infinite," and the "possible and the necessary." While humans are inherently reflective and self-conscious beings, to become a true self one must not only be conscious of the self but also be conscious of being created by a higher being, God. When one either denies this self or the self's creator, one is in despair. Edges of spine worn and scuffed, ink signature on title page; o/w a very nice copy.

This copy exhibits the reading 'agi-' at the end of line 11 on B2r indicative of the form with some of the errata corrected, and 3E2 blank, rather than bearing errata. Lancelot Andrewes was an English clergyman and scholar, who held high positions in the Church of England during the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I and King James I. He was in turn Bishop of Chichester, Ely and Winchester, and oversaw the translation of the Authorized (King James) Version of the Bible. His Tortura Torti - a learned work which grew out of the Gunpowder Plot controversy - was written in answer to Roberto Bellarmino's Matthaeus Tortus which had criticized James I's oath of allegiance. Tortura Torti is one of the Bishop's most substantial controversial works, in which he "refuted papal supremacy and the pope's power to dispense Catholics from moral and civil laws, and defended the king's supremacy over the Church of England.
