William Dennison was Lincoln's Postmaster General and Civil War Governor of Ohio. Beard addresses his letter to Dennison seeking a government position for a friend, and Dennison in turn refers the letter to President Hayes. Allan Melville's Signature on a work of scrivener's art.Allan Melville was Herman Melville's brother, literary agent, and when this document was signed, adult roommate. Allan resided in New York with a law office at 10 Wall Street. In 1856, Herman still had several adventures to go before he too would be pulled into the world of documents and scriveners at the Custom House.. An interesting piece of Melvilliana. Fine.

Also with the signature of Nathaniel Westland, dated 1675. Westland, a prominent merchant from Burlington, New Jersey, was appointed agent for the sale of land by the West New Jersey Society, a great land company organized in London in 1691. Being a merchant, Westland would have had much use of this book to check shipping rates on cargo from England. Small 8vo. Leather binding, rebacked, leather label on spine. The island was sold back to France in 1878, making it the longest held overseas possession in the Swedens history. He fought with distinction during the Gettysburg Campaign, where his company was heavily engaged at the Battle of Aldie. On September 8, 1864 he was commissioned as the lieutenant colonel of the 5th Massachusetts Cavalry (officially designated "5th Massachusetts Colored Volunteer Cavalry"). He was promoted to colonel and assumed command of the regiment on March 14, 1865, shortly before the end of the war.
