Double-page frontispiece of "City of Davenport, Iowa" looking across the Mississippi River. Very old signature of Wm. A. Meese on front paste down. Fair condition because head & toe of spine are worn back 5mm. Hinges sound; internally vg with light foxing, although the title page is somewhat browned probably from something laid in.

Index of names but without accompanying page numbers. 16 chapters plus appendix of biographies. Preliminary page folds out & is "Family of Dan Thomas." Chapters include "Indians in Northwest Iowa 1854-1880", "Coming of the Railroad", etc. The bound wrappers have clear plastic covers & the back one has a short tear (to plastic only). Near fine. Rare.

Parish. 4) The Color Bearer of the Twelfth Iowa Volunteer Infantry, by J. W. Rich. The issue also has book reviews, notes on the contributors, & other typical features for a historical quarterly. With the upcoming Iowa primaries/caucuses, etc., this issue is particularly pertinent to an early historical study of the Democrats in Iowa. Cover wrappers overlap the text block & are therefore chipped on the fore edges. Else fine.

Album of original two-sided oblong printed/ruled sheets filled out in ink & pencil on both sides. Shipments "Received of Wells Fargo & Co. Express at their Offfice in Peru (handwritten) (Iowa)." Very scarce original documents. 42 leaves: first 2 with 2" - 3" edge fore edge loss. Many others bottom chipped. More than half with small chips. All browned & brittle at the edges. Very scarce original documents, each sheet with date, where from, article, value, consignee, weight, cost, etc.

" RECORD OF WAY-BILLS Forwarded from Peru (handwritten) Office, State of Ia (written)" with month & date (first two numbers printed, last two written.1898-99. On a few leaves the Messenger is given. 22 leaves essentially whole - some with touch of edge loss. 3 more leaves torn, chipped. Label on front cover is soiled but give dates of April 1, 1897 - Sept 1899. Obviously a number of leaves are missing from earlier period. Covers edgeworn & pulled from binding. Very scarce original documents, each sheet with date, where to, article, value, consignor, address, destination, weight, cost, etc.
