This monthly periodical of new books published by major publishers included about 125pp of scholarly articles written by various people, & columns on different subjects. This issue's primary articles were written about the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, with directly related material on the Lewis & Clark's expedition. It includes, for example, the article, "The Significance of the Louisiana Purchase" by Frederick Jackson Turner. Among the book ads was a small one on the just published trail herd classic, The Log of a Cowboy. Also material about Teddy Roosevelt & his written works. This journal must have been on every book collector's subscription list. Now a scarce collector's item & most likely overlooked in many Lewis & Clark collections. Vg.

One of the great, scholarly books on this important subject. This edition features a new Intro by the author & "a pocket of five large fold-out maps not available since the original edition of 1959." Fine, like new in dj, just out of shrink wrap. Slight crinkling to a bit of dj edge from shrink wrap.

Lincoln: Univ of Nebraska Pr, 1983. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Folio blue cloth, gilt-stamped. 23 pages of introductory material. 126 map plates. Among the most sought of modern volumes on the expedition. This copy with moderate fading & a few minor spots & superficial scuffs on the front cover. Back cover has a wide band of fade running vertically 4 3/4" in from the spine. Yes, the spine is likewise moderately faded. Minor scuffs to back cover as per front cover. Priced accordingly. Internally fine.

n.p.: Privately Printed, 1991. First Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. This Richard C. Hoagland booklet about the planet Mars, THE BREAKTHROUGHS OF CYDONIA. This is the First (and only?) Edition thus, printed April 16, 1991, so stated. Hoagland is associated with several publications dealing with purported structures built on Mars, centered on the "Face" on Mars in the Cydonia region, and other space subjects of interest. Author Hoagland describes briefly the "NASA-Lewis Research Center television production" that was suddenly pulled. And etc.. Thirty-three (33) numbered pages plus copyright page. The Introduction summarizes the "Furor over 'Hoagland's Mars.'" There are nine (9) pages of photos and diagrams/drawings, and one (1) page of a Table, "Space Power Generator Test." Printed on cheap paper with melon-colored covers (and thus probably copies did not survive well) which are slightly faded, this 8 1/4 " x 10 3/4" booklet is in very good used condition. The key biography of one of the most important & adventurous men of the West who became the first Director of the U.S. Geological Survey. His mountaineering experiences in the Sierra Nevada were high adventure, indeed. Fine, as new in dj. Pristine. I bought this copy from publisher when it came out; never been opened.

A rather interesting compilation of short biographies of "Firsts" in the Pacific Northwest, by "Firsts" meaning famous and lesser known men including the likes of DeSmet, Astor, Cataldo, MacDonald, Glover, et. al. LAID IN is a one page t.l.s.(folded) from Bond on his letterhead to Craig Weir, Publisher of Trail Times, and to whom Bond inscribed this copy. Excellent content in the letter about Bond's research on the book. Moderately worn. Good plus very collectable copy due to the letter.

Printed light brown wraps. 206pp. Folding map of the Southwest with the pertinent landmarks & missionary trails noted. This monograph has to do with Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, Fray Marcos of Nizza & "Spanish Efforts to Penetrate" the Southwest 1536-1539. It includes also the expedition of "Pedro de Villazur, from Santa Fe, to the Banks of the Platte River, in Search of the French and the Pawnees, in the Year 1720." Other than a small chip at the top of the spine & small chip on the bottom of the spine re-glued, this copy in near fine, remarkable condition, as is the map. Not terribly scarce, but very collectable.

Bacon, three times, twice in pencil (ffep & t.p.) & once in ink (t.p.). Also ink stamp of Frederick Thompson, Mill Valley, on front paste down. In the middle of the facing endpapers, front & back, is a dark residue. Their location matches the size & very rough shape of the central motif of the cover blind-stamping. There is what appears to be a quite old blind-stamp seal on the lower title page. Moderate general foxing. This title is a classic of the frontier, & was republished in facsimile years ago in the Time-Life Classics series. An internet search leads to the Thompson family of Mill Valley & the Bank of America. Good. Howes 554.
