Front cover with spotting and stains. Unsightly but a serviceable reference. And he had an exhibition. Fairly unobtrusive pencil lines down the margins to mark passages by former owner who gave it a very close reading with a bit of thumbing on a few pages. Otherwise clean and the cord binding makes this a solid utilitarian copy with spirit. .

Bookplate of book collector Charles Walker Andrews, front pastedown. Externally a very fresh copy. Slipcase darkened at edges. James Boswell, from the first in his professional life as a barrister, had shown extraordinary interest in poor criminals who no one else would defend. Practicing in London, well past the success of his Life of Johnson, Boswell takes an interest in the well being of the unfortunate Mary Broad. .
