Early 20th-century reprint of Utagawa's famous book on Japanese women's fashions originally published in 1802.Volume 1 only of the 2 volume set.With 25 full-color woodblock prints depicting 12 scenes over double pages with different classes of women, 23 pages of Japanese text.Includes woodcuts of noble courtiers under cherry blossom, samurai wives relaxing, concubines, merchant women, servants at bathhouse, dancers, laundress, nursemaid, etc.Condition: blue embossed paper boards scuffed and discolored, but interior clean and bright, woodcuts free of foxing. Traditional Yotsume Toji four-hole stab binding stitched on the right-margin. Toyokuni Utagawa (1769-1825), was a grand master ukiyo-e print designer and woodblock artist, known for his portraits of kabuki actors.

Reprint from the 1880s of ukiyo-e artist Masanobu Okumura's depiction of nightlife in the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters in the Edo era.Masanobu Okumura (1686-1764) was a Japanese print designer, book publisher, illustrator and painter.This orihon concertina-style book includes 38 double-page illustrations of geisha with their maids and samurai customers, playing board games and cards, smoking tobacco pipes, playing shamisen, reading books, etc. One plate shows the artist Okumura painting a large screen. 38 woodblock prints printed in three colors on 76 pages bound in orihon concertina-style with decorative washi paper over boards.Condition: binding repaired with washi paper, interior bright and fresh with no spotting.

Woodblock reprint of two famous Japanese picture scrolls which recorded the unsuccessful Mongol invasions of Japan in the 13th century.The scrolls were originally drawn between 1275 and 1293 for the samurai Suenaga Takezaki to record his battlefield valor and deeds during Kublai Khan's attempted invasions of Japan. The scrolls depict the Battle of Bun'ei in 1274 and the Battle of Koan in 1281.
Complete in 3 volumes, with 66 pages with 56 color plates in vol. 1, 54 pages with 33 color plates in vol. 2, and 100 pages with 54 color plates in vol. 3. Edited by Beisai Kubota.Condition: paper covers slightly worn, a few pages browned (mostly Japanese text pages) but plates bright and vivid.

Complete set of Bairei Kono's Soka Hyakushu or Kusabana Hyakushu (One Hundred Varieties of Flowers), Tokyo, Yamada Unsodo, 1901-1904.
231 color woodcut plates bound in 4 volumes, stored in a custom green-cloth slip-case. The woodblock plates printed with natural vegetable dyes for true-to-life colors.
Vol. 1: 58 plates, Vol. 2: 58 plates
Supplements: Vol. 3: 60 plates, Vol. 4: 55 plates.
Condition: pale-blue paper covers slightly worn and grubby, but interior fresh and vibrant. First page in each volume with a large red illegible stamp (two on text pages, two on flower plates). A few plates with white flowers oxidized.
Bairei Kono (1844-1895) was a Japanese painter, book illustrator and art teacher famous for his botanicals and kacho-e (flower and bird) paintings.
