First published in Geneva, in 1919, as Mon Livre d'Heures; later editions were retitled Mein Stundenbuch. The book became Masereel's most popular, selling more than 100,000 copies in Germany during the Twenties, and garnering high praise from, among others, Thomas Mann. Historian Richard Kyle coined the term "graphic novel" in an essay in the November 1964 issue of the comics fanzine Capa-Alpha, but novel-length works in pictures-only forms have been published since the early nineteenth century. The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck, by Swiss caricaturist Rodolphe Töpffer, is the oldest recognized example, first published as Histoire de M. Vieux Bois in Geneva, in 1837, then in English translation in London, in 1841. Masereel followed up Mon Livre d'Heures (his second wordless novel) with more than 20 others. N. B. First Collected Edition of Coryate's remarkable account of his travels in Europe, the Middle East, and South Asia, an eighteenth-century reissue (originally printed in 1611), augmented with numerous other works, including Coryate's letters from India and a large section of commendatory poems?amounting to an original poetical miscellany of the great names of Jacobean literature, including Ben Jonson, John Donne, Inigo Jones, John Hoskins, and Dudley Digges. One of the greatest works of Elizabethan and Jacobean literature, as well as one of the earliest travelogs in English. According to Pforzheimer, there "probably has never been another such combination of learning and unconscious buffoonery as is here set forth. Coryate was a serious and pedantic traveller . . . His adventures probably appeared to his contemporaries as more ridiculous than exciting, but at this remove his chronicle, by its very earnestness, provides an account of the chief cities of early seventeenth century Europe which is at least as valuable as it is amusing." Coryat's Crudities was intended to encourage courtiers to enrich themselves through travel to the Continent. It contains historical data, architectural descriptions, details of local customs, information on prices, exchange rates, food and drink, and much more. His description of how Italians shielded themselves from the sun contains perhaps the first mention of "umbrella" in English literature. Table forks, almost unknown in England, were in general use in Italy; Coryate acquired one, imitated the Italian fashion of eating and continued to do so when he came home. While in Switzerland, Coryate heard the story of William Tell, and his charming rendering of it appears to be the earliest in English. N. B. Included in this sale, in London, from June 7th through the 10th, 1921, was a long series of novels, in parts, and rare pamphlets by Dickens; unpublished drawings by Rowlandson for The dance of death and The seven ages of man; caricatures, original drawings, and an extensive collection of books illustrated by George Cruikshank; publications by Thomas Bewick; the Kelmscott Chaucer, and the fourth folio edition of Shakespeare's Works. Two of the short stories in this collection, ?A Guatemalan Idyll? and ?A Day in the Open," originally were conceived as part of Bowles's only novel, Two Serious Women. But her husband, the composer and writer Paul Bowles, advised her to remove them from the novel and publish them separately. Typically in Bowles's stories, as in ?A Guatemalan Idyll." several plots are interwoven with inexplicable events and symbolic details into a multilayered narrative. Here, a woman has an affair with an unnamed male traveler; her daughter lets loose a snake in the middle of town, where it is squashed by a bus; accompanying the daughter is a boy whose head is wounded from falling on a rusty nail; later, the woman falls asleep near a convent, then seduces the boy who wakes her; the story ends when the traveler departs. The companion piece, ?A Day in the Open," is no less puzzling, in its use of language and nontraditional narrative techniques. In an oft quoted review of her collected works (?Up from the Underground,? The New York Times Book Review, February 29, 1967, p. 5), the poet John Asbury called Bowles ?one of the finest modern writers of fiction, in any language.? N. B. Eighty-two years after Samuel Simmons published the first edition of Paradise Lost, Thomas Newton completed this definitive edition, with a life of Milton and elaborate notes. The text arose directly from the controversy surrounding Richard Bentley's bastardized edition of 1732, which attempted to regularize the text, making the poem more Augustan and "correct." Newton used the last authoritative edition, published at the time of Milton's death, as his copy-text and carefully collated that text with the first edition of 1667. He also referred to all other major editions published prior to 1749 to verify the text and correct errors. His notes synthesized the work of many scholars and became the standard for scholarly editions for nearly 150 years. To accompany the newly refined text, Jacob Tonson contracted with Francis Hayman to design 12 illustrations, which were engraved by Charles Grignion (1716-1810) and Simon François Ravenet (1706-1774). Hayman's designs broke from baroque iconographic conventions, turning Satan from a horned demon into an imposing, heroic figure, and became the touchstone for illustrated editions of Paradise Lost well into the nineteenth century. In the 1660's, John Ray and his pupil (and, later, patron) Francis Willughby toured the Continent, gathering material for their planned complete classification of the vegetable and animal kingdoms. After Willughby's early death in 1672, which deprived Ray of both a collaborator and a friend, Ray took over his notes, and, having edited the incomplete manuscript and added his own observations, published Francisci Willughbeii ornithologiae libri tres; totum opus recognovit, digressit, supplevit Joannes Raius, in 1676. The present work, a translation by Ray, was published two years later and includes three more plates than the Latin edition as well as an expanded text, including three additional sections by Ray on fowling, falconry, and songbirds. In all, Ray and Willughby described more than 230 species, which they had observed. Ray's systemization was revolutionary (Zimmer calls it the "cornerstone of modern systematic ornithology"), preserving the broad division of land and water birds, but rather than subdividing functionally, on grounds of diet, singing ability, and other behavioral traits, he introduced a classification based on anatomy, using for criteria foot structure, beak form, and body size. In the preface, Ray writes that the plates, despite some difficulties in communication between himself and the engravers, "are the best and truest, that is, most like the live Birds, of any hitherto engraven in Brass."
