New Testament of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Translated from the original tongues: and with the former translations diligently compared and revised.

Hartford: Silas Andrus. Good. 1824. First Thus. Hardcover. Stereotyped by B. and J. Collins, New York. Johnstone and Van Norden, printers. 209 [1] p. Uncommon edition. Silas Andrus was one of the earliest binders to use a Leather (possibly a composite) binding embossed with a framed center panel. In this example the front cover is embossed with a center panel of cross hatched squares framed with bowed ribbon and framed again with multiple line tool, creating an extending frame effect. Facing Frontispiece and Title page have woodcut illustrations. A significant and uncommon first publication by this early American publisher. Andrus was a bookbinder and bookseller in Hartford Connecticut who branched out into book publishing in 1820. This New Testament is one of the first he published. There is a gift inscription written with pen and ink, dated 1826 and 1835 (?) on the ffep, which has been repaired with cellulose tape. Heavily worn edges along with rubbing. The back panel has separated and there is significant foxing throughout. (Reference: Edwin Wolf, Gothic Windows to Peacocks: American Embossed Leather Bindings, 1825-1855); 5.5 X 3" .

The Way of all Flesh

By Butler, Samuel

Pocket Books. Near Fine. 1939. First Thus. Softcover. #8. 4th printing, September 1939. Although the former owner neatly penned his name on the title page this book appears to have been unopened. Firm, solid binding, bright pictorial cover, red publisher edge stain. and bright red endpages. Minor wear on two corners and along the edges, else an exceptional copy. Written between 1873 and 1884 but not published until 1903, a year after Butler’s death, this uninhibited satire savages Victorian bourgeois values. V. S. Pritchett said, “One thinks of it lying in Samuel Butler’s desk for thirty years, waiting to blow up the Victorian family and with it the whole great pillared and balustraded edifice of the Victorian novel.”; 16mo 6" - 7" tall .
