Homer's Odyssey with the Scholia, the first volume (only) of an edition that included the Batrachomyomachia as well as the Hymns, Epigrams and Fragments. In Greek throughout- there are NO Latin notes. No editor attributed. Leather, all edges deckled. Scarce. Condition notes: Leather much ravaged, front board attached but joint strained, text block firm, pages clean and bright. A crisp, good-sized typeface.

Introduction, notes (copious) etc in Latin. Paper strip of vocabulary notes- certainly not recent- left in rear of book. Condition notes: Boards very worn, hinges worn but holding, text block sound, pages clean and bright. Schoolboy geometry to front free end paper opposite title page, and title page has name of a previous owner in ink (William C???t, March 19th 1815). Last page of index creased. Rear paste-down with pencil scribble (not modern, I think). Rear free end paper missing, the contents ending with Corrigenda etc to verso of last page of index.

Edited by Heinz Meisner of Silesia, printed/published by Johann Gottlieb Vierling in Hof (Curia Variscorum) (Hof in 1744 would have belonged to the Principality of Bayreuth and is now in Bavaria). Half vellum, marbled paper covered boards. Contents: title (blank verso), 2 page dedication to Johann Martin Albert, Johann Christoph Schilling and Christian Friedrich Knauer, then Dedication 6 pp, Praefatio 10 pp, then Ex. Gerardo Ioanne Vossio, de Historicis Latinis 3 pp, then a laudatory verse to the editor by Johann Christian Schlotter, then the Situ Orbis (numbered pp 1-87), then three indexes, viz Index I, Argumenta Capitum Sistens, Index II Res Notatu Dignas exhibens, Index III Mominum Eorumque Propriorum. A large, clear typeface. Name etc of previous owner, dated May 1751, in Latin to front free end paper. This same name, and a subsequent one ('J. P. Crecelius et nunc F. G. Habel', at my best reading) to title page. Condition notes: Boards very rubbed and worn; damage to rear board especially. Some inevitable age-yellowing to pages. Binding firm.

Condition notes: Various ownership information to the pastedown and front free end paper, the earliest of which is dated 1797. Illegible (at least to me) pencil notes to end papers. Rear free end paper torn for an inch or so in from its long edge. Front paste down becoming unpasted. Leather somewhat rubbed and knocked, binding tight and overall a very nice copy, if with eye-wateringly small text.

Condition notes: Leather (suede) rubbed, pulling away here and there, some staining to front board and to top inch or so of title page, some ink stains to boards, rubbing to spine with loss top and bottom. Internally clean, and overall still a sound, pleasant copy.

Condition notes: Boards rather bumped and frayed, but still a firm, clean study copy. Three separate owners' names to front end papers.

There is a substantial index at the end of Volume 2, and colophon "LVGD. BATAV. Apud Viduam & Haeredes JOHAN. ELSEVIERII, Academ.Typograph.. 1672." Binding is old vellum. Rear free end paper is torn at corner. Rear paste down has the following pencil note (not recent): 'Elzevir Variorum 1672. "A good copy of this Edition of 1672, which is printed by the Elzevir, is worth £2:12:6". Dibdin's Introduction, Vol 2 p. 453.'. Condition notes: Vellum grubby but sound. Hinge strained at frontispiece (photos available- please ask), otherwise binding firm and very tight. Some grubbiness to page margins.

One leaf detached; damage to free front end paper of volume 3, which has rubbed through to the verso of the frontispiece (although damaging only the margin). Photographs on request. Leaves of Volume VI (Table of events and index) have been poorly trimmed. Some age toning to pages, and offsetting from some of the frontispieces.
