Portland, OR: Aguila Inc, 1977. Poster. Near Fine. A very scarce poster for Cinco de Mayo festivities in Portland, Oregon. While there were some 50,000 Latinos in Oregon in the mid-1970s, artifacts of Latinx cultural events from this time period are uncommon and decorative ones are very scarce. Not much is known about the artists, but they produced posters for Colegio César Chávez, an independent Chicano-themed college in Central Oregon that operated in the 1970s. They variously spelled their names on their posters Marriquez and Manriquez. Colorful screenprint (serigraph): 14-1/4 by 22-1/2 inches. Near fine, with a bit of ink staining from the printing process in one margin. Signed in the plate.

Northampton, MA: Publicado por Simeon Butler, 1828. First Thus. Hardcover. Very good. A rather curious Spanish-language imprint from Massachusetts, and not the more typical Philadelphia and New York. This is a translation of the diplomat Alexander Hill Everett's 1827 book, America: Or, a General Survey of the Political Situation of the Several Powers of the Western Continent, with Conjectures on Their Future Prospects. The book was written while Everett was the US ambassador (minister) to Spain. Despite that position, he writes favorably of Spanish American independence efforts. The publisher was listed as an agent for the sale of the English-language edition. It is possible that Everett, a Bostonian, commissioned the translation, although the copyright is assigned to the publisher. iii, 296 pages. First edition of the Spanish translation. A very good copy in original orange boards with a tan cloth spine.

San Antonio: Wings Press, 2001. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. One of 50 signed and numbered hardcover copies (there was also a paperback issue). A collection of prose and poetry imagining the details of the life of the poet's Jewish grandmother who fled Europe for Chile in 1939. Agosín writes in Spanish; an English translation by Brigid A. Milligan and Laura Rocha Nakazawa is provided on the facing pages. Agosín, a native of Baltimore, was raised in Chile and now teaches at Wellesley College. 188 pages. First edition (first printing). A fine hardcover copy in a fine unprinted acetate jacket. Numbered and signed by Agosín on the colophon.

Washington, DC: Government Printing Office, 1881. First Edition. Leather bound. Very good. A volume from the library of Romualdo Pacheco, the first Latinx governor of California. Pacheco (1831-1899) was born in Santa Barbara, California, when the town was part of Mexico. He was a leading political figure in his day, serving in many elected state offices and as a diplomat in Central America. In addition to serving as California's governor, he was also the first Latino in Congress (the Territory of New Mexico sent several nuevomexicanos to Congress as non-voting members). This volume comes from his time in the House of Representatives (1877-1883). This volume is stamped "R. Pacheco." in gilt at the base of the spine. San Francisco: Los Siete de La Raza, 1970. Ephemera. Very good. A single issue of this short-lived community newspaper which sprang up in San Francisco's Mission District to gather support for Los Siete, a group of Latinos who were then under arrest for the murder of a police officer. The men were ultimately acquitted. This issue includes interviews with the defendants and a long article about a family that was victim to police violence. 16 pages, eleven in English and five In Spanish. 11-3/8 by 17 inches. Very good. Yellowing from age, as expected.

(N.-pl. but Arvada, CO?]: [n.p. but the author], 1970. Pamphlet. Very good. Abelardo self-published these emphatic political poems in 1969 and helped set the tone for early Chicano movement poetry. This chapbook was sold widely at readings and festivals and despite a relatively large circulation-Abelardo says he sold 20,000 copies or more-it seldom turns up. Since Abelardo cared not a whit about collectors or the first edition fetish, no attempt was made to differentiate between printings. I have seen copies with a $1.50 price on the cover and without. In Green and brown glossy wrappers. Also thin green wrappers. The order of the poems may also vary along with the typesetting (which can be in italics or roman). Until a couple of copies with 1969 inscriptions surface (and I am not aware of any), "early" printing will have to suffice for a description. 36 pages. He wrote the poems for his grandchildren and the manuscript remained unpublished when he died in 1910. This is one of the most attractive books, printed in yellow and black, from Casa Editorial Lozano, which specialized in rather pedestrian versions of Mexican books for a US audience. Introduction by Luis G. Urbina. lxxxi pages. 5-3/8 by 7-3/4 pages. First edition (first printing). Wrappers a bit worn along the top edge; previous owner's name inside, else very good.

A substantial collection from a leading Chicana poet, incorporating some of the 1998 collection of the same name (which was limited to 10 copies), with many previously unpublished poems. This limited edition, in a faux quarter-leather binding, was published in a trade edition and this limited edition of 100 copies, signed and numbered by the author, with a handwritten line of poetry on the colophon. The edition was announced as coming in a wooden box; however only ten or so boxes were completed and most of the limited edition books, including this one, were never distributed in the box. 312 pages. Volume II contains "The Analysis of the Parts of Speech", "Spanish Syntax Made Easy", "The Commercial Secretary", and "El lector español." This is a very early American guide to learning Spanish, based on a system for teaching French developed by Nicolas Dufief. The authors were Manuel de Torres, a Spaniard living in exile in Philadelphia because of his involvement in Latin American independence movements, and Louis Hargous, a Spanish and French teacher at Princeton. This issue includes a poem "Roosevelt Rd./ 1200 South / Chicago" and a short prose piece, " A Rice Sandwich" by Sandra Cisneros. The poem was part of Cisneros's MFA these but has not been collected in a book; the prose appeared a year later in A House on Mango Street. Covers a bit scuffed, else near fine in wrappers.
