Rare dustjacket has closed tears and shelfwear along edges, but overall in nice condition. Protected in mylar jacket. Front endpapers is a steeplechasing scene. Back endpapers show a polo match. Unpaginated. Clear and concise drawing instructions geared to make the aspiring artist comfortable with plungeing forward and putting pencil to paper. Lots of sketches and full drawings with explanations. Shows lots horses and dogs, but also still life, people, and skiing, boxing, tennis, and football. Bill was born out west and shipped east with others from his ranch to be sold at auction. His face is too long, his ears are too big, and even George, who falls in love with him, has to admit he is ugly. But Bill is tall, and strong, and gentle, and brave. George is recovering from an illness, and has not been told he can ride Bill yet, but then again he has not been told he can¿t. One page of introduction by Brown tells how he wen far afield for the odds and ends that make up thte complete picture of horse in sport. These are impressions not portraits. . Each page has an illustration with short description on one side, blank on the other. From horse racing to steeplechase, polo to show jumping, fox hunting and all aspects of horses and riding. Scarce book about a dog, part Irish Terrier in the text but all Irish Terrier in Brown's drawings, who worked his way into the affection of an army company during World War I. No dogs are supposed to be on the transport, but Mike manages to be on it when it reaches France. Both author and illustrator were with the AEF.
