Court of Quarter Sessions in Sept. 1858 to lay out a road in Delaware Township report on 11 Feb. 1859 that they have laid out a road from McAllisterville to John Landis' saw mill, then through lands of John Branthoffer to the public road that runs from East Salem to Liverpool. The court approved it on 13 March 1860. #2: The people appointed by the Juniata Co. Court of Quarter Sessions in April 1859 to lay out a road from Crossroad Schoolhouse to Salem and to Goodville report on 10 Dec. 1859 that they have laid out the road, which runs along lands of the heirs of John Branthoffer (who had died on 28 March 1859). The court approved it on 3 April 1860. #3: Inhabitants of Delaware Township petitioned to have a road changed that ran from East Salem via Rapp's saw mill, laying a new road and vacating part of the old road. Near Fine. 5 handwritten letters to William Ward, 1873-1879, regarding the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad, which existed from 1872 to 1885; it was succeeded by the Philadelphia Midland Railroad. William Ward was one of the organizers of the Philadelphia and Chester County Railroad and in 1874 was the president and treasurer pro tem. Letters #1 and #2 (Sept. 5 and Dec. 5, 1873) are from Jos. H. McKeehan, an attorney in Philadelphia, who is writing about deliquent subscribers to the railroad. Letter #3 (Dec. 18, 1873) is from the Village Record, a newspaper in West Chester, Pa., with a copy of the advertisement that ran in the paper listing the dates that instalments from railroad subscribers were due in 1872. Letter #4 (Nov. 26, 1875) is from John Smith of Ridley Park, about a plan to petition to vacate a street and public ground adjoining Mr. Bartol's purchase. Sir Leslie Ward (1851-1922), English caricaturist and portrait painter, signed his works 'Spy.' Sir Frederick Peel (1823-1906), second son of Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel, was first elected to Parliament in 1849 for Leominster; later he represented Bury. He was appointed to the Railway and Canal Commission at its establishemnet in 1873 and remained a commissioner until his death. In Very Good Condition: closed 1-cm. tear from upper edge and same from right-hand edge; clean and bright.

The Lykens Valley Railroad and Coal Company was incorporated in Pennsylvania in 1830; Thomas P. Cope was the first president. It ran from Millersburg to Williamstown and was the fourth in the United States and the first in Dauphin County to carry anthracite coal. By 1845 the line had to be regraded and relaid. It merged into the Penndel Co. in 1956. Written at the head of the front wrapper: "Preserve with Care." Very scarce. In Good- Condition: wrapper is lightly soiled; front wrapper is detached but present, with closed 4-cm. tear from gutter edge; somewhat brittle, with chipping at edges and separations at gutters; a few notations internally; otherwise, clean.

Elliot Christopher Cowdin (1819-1880) was an American businessman; his firm imported ribbons, silks, flowers, and novelties from Paris. He served one term in the New York State Assembly beginning in 1876. In this speech he discusses the decline in American ocean steam trade since the beginning of the Civil War, particularly in relation to that of Great Britain. In Good Condition: lacking front wrapper; minor loss at upper corner of title page; shadow on lower corner of title page; otherwise, clean and solid.

Includes a wealth of information about bicycles, racing, and clubs; as well as: an interview with Helen Baldwin and information about other women bicylists; a long illustrated report on the Second National Bicycle Show, which includes photographs; and many illustrated advertisements. A scarce issue of a magazine from the birth of cycling as a popular activity. In Very Good- Condition: lacking wrapper; p. 1 and p. 274 are soiled; closed 7-cm. tear from gutter edge of first leaf; edges of first leaf and last chipped; corners of last few leaves creased, with minor loss at upper corners of last 2 leaves; the majority of this very large issue is clean and tight.

The envelope and folder are both printed in green. The steamboats are the Rob't E. Lee, the Savannah, and the Natchez, all by Biederman. There is information about each steamboat on the inside of the folder. This was a premium offered by Cities Service Oil Co., which in 1964 became CITGO. The folder and prints are in Fine Condition: clean and bright. The envelope is in Very Good Condition: slightly soiled; darkened along upper edge of front; intact.

Franklin Benjamin Gowen (1836-1889) served as president of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad from 1870 to 1884 and again briefly in 1886. During his presidency, he was responsible for the railroad illegally running its own mining operations and for violent and indiscriminate attacks on the Molly Maguires and mineworkers in general. In this speech, Gowen argued against aspects of a bill to control railroad freight discrimination, proposed by Willis James Hulings (1850-1924), representative from Venango County in the Pennsylvania legislature. The text of the bill in included here; it was enacted. Scarce. Near Fine. 1 sheet of light grey paper containing 3 engraved certificates for subscriptions to the Buckingham & Doylestown Turnpike Road Company, dated 184_. Printed by Grattan, 48 S. Third St. The Buckingham and Doylestown Turnpike Road Company was incorporated in 1843 and existed until 1917. The turnpike established in 1843 ran from the Buckingham meetinghouse in Bucks County, Pa., by Yardley's mill to Doylestown, taking over the former Doylestown and Danborough turnpike road company. Material related to American turnpike companies from the first half of the 19th century is scarce. In Near Fine Condition: left edge is slightly rough where the sheet was removed from a volume of subscription forms; clean and bright.
