Autograph letter signed, dated Oct. 22, 1902 (on Corsham Court, Wiltshire, stationary) to unknown recipient praising the Burnham Rifle Club, which had been formed in 1899 (either the first or second rifle club formed in England). Methuen concluded: "I should consider it a great honour to be elected a patron." Lieutenant General Paul Sanford Methuen (1845-1932) was captured during the Boer War in March 1902 but released tne returned to England during the summer. In Very Good- Condition: one horizontal fold; exterior is lightly soiled; interior is clean and bright.

By 1900 the author, Horace Butterworth, had become manager of the University of Chicago's football team. He was strongly opposed to the creation of professional football teams. In 1903 and 1904 he was director of athletics at Northwestern University and in 1907 he coached Temple University's football team to a 4-and-2 record.
