Description:
London: T. Becket, 1778. Paperback. Very Good. Title continued: "on the Motion for the Address, and the Amendment: With Notes." The second edition, printed from the same setting of type as the first. vi, [2], 74 p.; 21 cm. 8vo. Modern marbled paper wrapper. References: Howes, T258; English Short Title Catalog, 3844. Six-digit number stamped at head of title page. This satirical pamphlet by playwright Richard Tickell first published before Parliament met in 1778 to consider that pesky problem in the American colonies, and reprinted several times. Tickell was reported to have mimicked the style of various politicians so successfully that when one spoke without having seen the pamphlet, "his speech was so exactly like the anticipation of it, that the House burst into a roar of laughing, so that he could not go on." [Mackenzie, Henry. Anecdotes and Egotisms (1927) 148]. In Very Good Condition: lacking half title and final blank leaf; occasional foxing; otherwise clean and tight.

London: Walter Haddon, 1894. Hardcover. Very Good. Greiffenhagen, Maurice. 2 vols (384, 249, [1] p.): illustrations; 24 cm. Brown cloth with gilt-stamped spine title and cover title; gilt-stamped front cover decoration and back cover publisher's emblem. Vol. 1 includes the title page supplied by the publisher for the first six issues, published from May to October 1893. That title page and the cover were available from the publisher for a small fee. Only the first four issues of vol. 2 were published, from November 1893 to February 1894. Apparently neither a title page nor a vol. 2 cover were provided by the publisher, as issues 7-10 were here bound in the same cover as vol. 1, which has "vol. 1" on the spine and "The first volume of the Butterfly" on the front cover. As the four issues did not require the same size cover, blank leaves were bound in following issue 10, in order to fit the cover. These 2 volumes contain all 10 scarce issues of this English magazine from… Read More
