Philadelphia: N. Snellenburg & Co, 1891. Very Good -. Illustrated Sketches and Stories for Young America by George M. Vickers was issued by the Philadelphia department store Snellenburg & Co. in 1891 as an advetisement for the store. These pictorial boards (27 cm. high), long-since removed from the book, have the title of the book on the front board with a black-and-white illustration of a ship under steam in the center and color illustrations of boys skating and cycling around it. At the lower edge is added: "Presented to Our Young Friends. N. Snellenburg & Co. Philadelphia." In the upper right-hand corner is a blue circular emblem with the motto: "Snellenburg's Good Phila. Made Clothing G.P.M.C. Others 30%." The back board displays color illustrations of the two department stores in Philadelphia with the same motto in brown. Philadelphia: George W. Jacobs & Co, 1925. Fine. 2 advertising inserts printed on both sides. One (16 x 10 cm.) advertises the mail order department on one side and the stationery department on the other. The other (10 x 16 cm.) advertises a "Special Book Service" to provided buyers with information on new books in their areas of interest. No date of publication, but the address on both is 1726 Chestnut St., and the first adds "Note the New Address." In 1925 George W. Jacobs sold the publishing side of his business, but he continued his book and stationery store, moving to 1726 Chestnut St. Scarce. In Fine Condition: clean and crisp.

Tan linen with a gilt-stamped spine title and the image of a printing press blind-stamped on the front board. Binder's stamp on back fixed endpaper for Schuberth Bookbindery, S.F. Printed in red and black. Illustrations and inserts are in color. Includes index. Fore-edges are untrimmed. Book Club of California publication no. 180. One of a limited edition of 750 copies. This is the second, expanded edition, which is a facsimile of the 1981 handprinted edition. Additional material includes bibliographic details and personal notes by the Allens on each of the five books they completed between 1981 and 1985, an Epilogue by Lewis and Dorothy Allen, "An Appreciation" by Carey S. Bliss, and a checklist of Allen Press ephemera compiled by D. Steven Corey. In Fine Condition: a crisp and bright copy.

Front wrapper reproduces title page; back wrapper bears series list for Répertoire du Vieux-Colombier, of which this title is no. 22. "Acheve d'imprimer le 7 Juin 1924 par F. Paillart a Abbeville (France)." -- colophon. A few pages are unopened. The author, Bengali author, artist, and composer Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941), was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature (in 1913). This is a translation of his 1912 play Dak Ghar, known in English as The Post Office. This edition is scarce. In Very Good- Condition: wrappers are lightly creased; some pages were opened carelessly; clean and tight.

In Very Good- Condition: heavily rubbed; old repair at vol. 1 head of spine; some browning of pages; clean and tight.

This is number 14 of a limited edition of 150 copies printed on Hazelbourn paper by the Southworth-Anthoensen Press, Portland, Maine, in Dec. 1939. The Rowfant Club was founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1892 and remains a club for those interested in book collecting and publishing; however, membership requires a penis, which seems unrelated to either book collecting or publishing. In Very Good Condition: 1-cm. closed tear from fore-edge of front wrapper; discoloration on back wrapper and at lower fore-edge of last few leaves; otherwise, clean and tight.

This salesman's dummy contains the frontispiece, the foreword by Major General A.W. Greely, table of contents, list of illustrations, samples of the text and illustrations (primarily photographs), and the subscription forms.
