The lithograph was created by Edmund Walker (1813 or 1814-1882) of Day & Son, after James Rattray's drawing. James Rattray (1818-1854) was a lieutenant in the British Bengal Army during the first Anglo-Afghan War, 1839-1842. The sketches he produced were published in 30 plates in Scenery, Inhabitants, & Costumes of Afghaunistan (1847-48). This is plate no. 2, a portrait of Dost Mohammed, who had been deposed as Emir of Afghanistan. In January 1841, when Rattray was granted an audience with him in Peshawar, Dost Mohammed was a prisoner, on his way to exile in Calcutta. Rattray wrote that since Dost Mohammed had been "a ruler just and merciful and attentive to affairs of state" the people of Peshawur thought that he had been unjustly treated by the British. The sketches he produced were published in 30 plates in Scenery, Inhabitants, & Costumes of Afghaunistan (1847-48). This is plate no. 14, showing two falconers from Kohistan, Khudadard and Guldin, with their hawks. Black lacquer boards; front board illustrated with scene of a woman and a man painted in gilt and red. None of the postcards have been used and none have dates of publication. Some of the cards were produced by Tonboya in Yokohama; the firm was actively publishing hand-colored postcards from about 1910 to about 1930. The first postcard is a view of Mt. Fuji with a foreground illustration painted in gilt and black. The next two are portraits of Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken in black with a gilt emblem above each of their heads. Grey cloth with gilt-stamped spine and cover titles over turquoise background, with gilt-stamped decoration. Illustrationed dust jacket with publisher's advetisements on back section. Signed by the author on front free endpaper, dated Sept. 1955. Contains 21 short stories about the bond between people and animals in India. The author, Pinckney Alston Waring (1895-1978), was a Pennsylvania Quaker who spent part of his life working with American Friends Service Committee in India. The illustrations are by Vera Bock (1905-1973), a Russian-American illustrator and graphic designer. Book is in Near Fine Condition: slight discoloration on fixed endpapers from dust jacket; clean and bright. Dust jacket is in Good+ Condition: edges are rubbed; minor loss at ends of spine; several closed tears from edges; color is still bright.
