Sunned on spine and adjacent portion of wrappers; bottom fore-corner of lower cover slightly creased; faint trace of foxing to edges and inside of wrappers. Very good condition. "This is intended to be a human story about motorists and the cars they bought, drove, raced, crashed, cursed, scrapped, hated - and loved. Early Motoring in South Africa is a nostalgic and informative look at the first 40 years of the motor-car in Southern Africa - the good years before the servant became the master, but also the years of frustration and disappointment, bad roads, rough terrain and economic depression. Spanning the period 1897 to 1939 there are over 425 photographs, most of which are unique, and an authoritative yet entertaining text." .

(Cape Town: Struik, 1978) 0869771019. 4to; original powder-blue boards, lettered in gilt on spine; laminated pictorial dustwrapper; pp. 248, incl. index; lavishly illustrated with photographs, very largely in full colour. Dustwrapper edgeworn and a bit creased; ownership blind-stamp to front free endpaper and brief gift inscription to introduction page. Very good condition, in a modest dustwrapper. "THE GREAT STEAM TREK is more than a mere catalogue of engine types ... While the enthusiast will appreciate the accuracy of the text and the technical accomplishment of the 319 photographs (illustrating no less than 85 different classes of locomotive), the layman will be entranced by the beauty of many of the shots, and the anecdotes which pepper the text will give him an insight into an all but vanished era. For anyone who has ever travelled behind steam, this very personal view of the history of steam power in South Africa will awaken a sharp nostalgia for the 'cinders-in-your-eye' days." .

([Bulawayo]: Rhodesia Railways Historical Committee, 1970). Small oblong 4to (153 x 90 mm); spiral-bound boards; unpaginated (but pp. 58); each leaf has a photograph of the unit on the recto, with technical drawing on the verso. Boards a little rubbed; occasional fox spot. Good to very good condition. 'This fine collection of photographs has been published by the Rhodesia Railways' Historical Committee in the hope that it will stimulate interest in Rhodesia's own Railways. There are three main types of locomotives operating on Rhodesia Railways:- "Straight," "Garratt" and "Diesel," and all are depicted from the smallest to the largest. The standard of operating efficiency of these steam and diesel locomotives has been very high, resulting in a very low maintenance demand. Rhodesia Railways' steam locomotives form one of the few first class fleets remaining in the world today.' - from the Foreword by the chairman of the Rhodesia Railways Historical Committee .

(Cape Town: Struik, 1985) 0869772112. 12mo; laminated pictorial boards; pp. 168, incl. index; liberally illustrated with photographs in monochrome and full colour. Near-fine condition. "At long last the railway enthusiast has access to all the information he ever dreamed of finding. Here, for the first time within one book are all the classes of locomotives that ever operated on the South African Railways - steam, electric, diesel - even odds and sods - interestingly described and illustrated as well. A good deal of the information has been gleaned either from archives or from railway lovers here and overseas, some of it never before published. The authors, themselves enthusiasts for as long as they can remember, were inspired to produce the book after years of frustrating attempts to find 'missing' engines, even though Leigh Paxton had become an authority on 'steam' in the process. Each reference contains information on the locomotive's maker, designer, year of purchase,… Read More

Dustwrapper somewhat edgeworn. Very good condition. "This detailed account of the birth of narrow gauge railways in South West Africa, their struggle against geography and the tribulations of War, and in some cases their supplanting by lines of a wider gauge, is the result of some twenty years of research by the joint authors. Much of what is told survives in written form nowhere else, for documentation of the narrow gauge in Africa, unlike Britain, has never been strong. Probably the world will never see again a situation where the narrow gauge train was the only means of movement, for carrying water, for a funeral, for a weekend picnic, for the Government's officers to do their business. These lines which spread through the deep gorges… Read More

There will be peculiarities of equipment-design or track layout that cannot be explained by an examination of the situation that exists today. In Southern Africa however the history of railways is to a remarkable extent the history of the sub-continent itself. Only in Cape Province does the history of the country extend back to more than a century before the coming of railways, and history in all the countries of Southern Africa is dramatic and compelling to the last degree." .
