(Underberg: the author, 2002) 062018664X. 210 x 148 mm; saddle-stitched pictorial wrappers; pp. 52, incl. index; map; some line drawings. Lower cover has penned note of height of mountain peaks; earlier owner's name is hatched over on upper cover. Very good condition. 'I was ... motivated by the fact that existing backpackers' books are poor in their treatment of Lesotho, covering it almost as an afterthought. Lesotho is a beautiful and fascinating country, an ideal place for the back packer, and deserves better. And so "A Backpacker's Guide to Lesotho" was born, and will, I hope, provide a basis for many enjoyable days of travelling.' .

(London: Jonathan Cape, 1923). Large 8vo; original dark blue buckram, lettered in gilt on spine and upper cover; pp. 132, incl. index; colour frontis. with tissue-guard; plates. Slight, partial discolouration to cloth; a little scattered foxing. Very good condition. (Hosken, p. 64; Schapera E522) "These few pages attempt to show the Basuto people in their homes, to tell in brief outline their history, and to describe their country. They aim at satisfying the appetite of those who, having friends in Basutoland, want to know something of the place, its scenery and its people without being glutted with the intricacies of tribal genealogies and the minute details of internecine strife." - From the Preface. "Useful, general account ... good bibliography." - Schapera: Select Bibliography of South African Native Life and Problems, p. 89 .

"Dr. R. C. Germond has rendered a service to Basutoland, to South Africa, and to students of history in general in publishing these translations of the letters of the early French Protestant missionaries in Basutoland. ... These letters tell the story of men of God who came to Basutoland primarily to preach the Gospel and never forgot that first calling, but who almost unwillingly found themselves often cast for the role of ambassadors or special pleaders for the Basuto people. They tell the story also of their heroic wives, whose part in the pioneering story… Read More

(Johannesburg: Ravan Press, 1981). 8vo (213 x 140 mm); original wraps laid on boards; pp. xvi + 219, incl. index; map, tables and diagrams. Ex-library copy with reinforced wraps, covered with clear adhesive plastic; stamps and label remnants to endpapers and prelims. Good condition. "Lesotho, once 'the granary of the Free State and part of the Cape Colony', eventually became an impoverished labour reserve. Mass labour migration destroyed family life in Lesotho as well as in Botswana, Swaziland and the Bantustans within South Africa. Why did the migrant labour system not end with political independence in these countries? This fundamental question is examined by Colin Murray in his penetrating historical study of Lesotho." .

(Morija: Morija Sesuto Book Depot, 1971). 8vo; original green rexine, lettered in black on spine and upper cover; pp. (viii) + 116, incl. index; plates; maps, incl. folding. Very good condition. Uncommon. The author attempts "to describe how, between 1871 and 1881, the Cape government on behalf of the British Government, performed the task of ruling the Basotho, who had become British subjects in March 1868. Several problems arose from this exercise in government by proxy. The attitude of the Basotho towards the Cape, for example, hinted at their dissatisfaction with the arrangement. From time to time their spokesmen said they would have preferred direct rule by England, and were a little unhappy to find themselves wards of the Cape Colony. The Cape's relations with the republic of the Orange Free State were in danger of becoming less cordial because of the treatment of the Basotho by the officials and/or ordinary citizens of that country, which sometimes elicited protests from the Cape… Read More

Signed by both Mpho Mthunya and Kendall.
