London: Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy, 1824. First Edition. Hardcover. Foxing to endpapers but text is quite clean with wide margins. Spine leather is dry affecting the royal monogram, which we have been unable to identify, but the spine label is in very nice condition. The main defect is the missing front cover. Very Good. Quarto (8-1/4" x 10-5/8"); xvi, 408 pages. Bound in contemporary polished calf leather with marbled endpapers, a gilt-lettered morocco spine label with a royal monogram in the top spine panel, but the front board is missing. An important and comprehensive early work on the history of wine, illustrated with woodcut vignettes and charts. Chapters on many aspects of wine including ancient wine cellars, wines of various countries, dietetic and medical qualities of wine, and much more. With 10 appendices and an index.

Reading [UK], 1839. Hardcover. Fairly clean and readable; spine lacking, boards loose but holding. Good. Calf-backed boards, 6-1/2" x 7-3/4". An English Manuscript Recipe book signed on the front pastedown "Mrs Garrard/Friar St./Reading/Berks 39" consisting of 100 pages, mostly not numbered and nearly all of which are filled in with manuscript recipes, with the first two pages being a numbered index, as well as a dozen or so loose pages of recipes in various hands laid in. Included are wines, pies, cakes, etc. Some examples are Pickled Mushroom Sauce, Baked Apple Pudding, Spunge Cake, Walnut Catsup Soy, Oyster Sausages, Siberian Crabs, Ginger Beer, Ginger Wine, etc. Roughly about 150 recipes in all.

New York: D. D. Smith, 1805. First Edition. Hardcover. Lacking the endpapers; small chip at the top of the spine. A clean, attractive, unsophisticated copy in original binding of a scarce and important book. Twentyfourmo (3-3/8" x 5-3/8") bound in original full sheep leather with gilt rules on the spine; 180 pages. The second American cookbook, preceded by Amelia Simmons's much better known AMERICAN COOKERY, printed four times before the publication of this volume, which is much scarcer than the Simmons. It is also distinguished as the first American cookbook published in New York. In addition to the recipes for broiling, hashing, preserving, pickling, fricasees, soups, puddings, pies, etc., there are 20 pages devoted to the making of wine, quite early for an American book.
