A one-page AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED with initials and written in French on a 4-3/4" x 6-1/2" sheet of paper folded in half with the address on the verso, date and place taken from envelope. Addressed to Mr. Gorardin [likely Maurice Girardin, a Parisian dentist who became a successful art dealer]. Roughly translated: "I have given the matter a great deal of thought and we will talk about it once again. Think about the workshops and let me know what you have learned, unless I find something at Versailles or farther. Forgive my reluctance. It is not due to a lack of confidence or of friendship which you will better understand when we talk. I hate to tie myself down but have a great love for my independence, and I don't know to which it refers, morally advantageous. See you on Wednesday." Welliver writes out a complete 24-line poem, "Binsey Poplars," by Gerard Manley Hopkins. With the envelope addressed by Welliver. An interesting piece.

Superb and touching one-page letter in Kent's minuscule hand to his 25-year-old daughter Clara expressing his disappointment that she will not be spending Christmas with him. In full: "It was about 12 years ago when, out of consideration for your mother, I gave up claiming my family for Christmas Day and set New Years Day as our day for Christmas celebration. That this gave you children two Christmases we hoped was doubly nice for you; and that it gave us Christmas--though a week later--with my children was a happiness that we planned for and looked forward to. Fletcher Martin (1904-1979) gained a reputation for his paintings of the San Francisco waterfront, rodeos, and boxing matches. He worked as an assistant to Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros in the early 1930s and received several mural commissions from the WPA. His work is represented in the collections of the Library of Congress, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Metropolitan Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Modern Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, San Francisco Museum of Art, Denver Art Museum and the Houston Art Museum.

Hilda Castellon, wife of the famous Spanish American printmaker, Federico Castellon, was a talented artist whose work, based on personal observation and often realistic, was overshadowed by her husband's more popular surrealistic efforts.
