Description:
London: Constable & Company Limited, (1932). First Edition. Hardcover. Foxing to endpapers and to two pages of text. Very Good, lacking the scarce dustwrapper. Pictorial boards and twenty woodblock illustrations within by John Farleigh. Laurence A210a. This copy INSCRIBED and SIGNED to Catherine Inge/from/Bernard Shaw and dated 30/11/32 on the half-title page. Pasted to the facing blank page is an AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED "G. B. S." from Shaw to My dear Mrs. Inge discussing a concert as well as the publication of this book. In full: It was extraordinarily recreative to hear those boys' voices after the screams of the female bourgeoisie of the west country at the Three Choirs Festival. And imagine its being the first time I ever heard a note of music at St. Pauls! THE BLACK GIRL is now equipped with a preface (at the end, as Sir Walter Scott recommended) and a lot of fascinating pictures. The one on page 56 is a speaking likeness of myself in my radiant youth. Keep it on the top shelf…

Description:
1983 - 1990. Letters. Folds from mailing. Near Fine. Superb archive of seven letters from the author of ANGELA'S ASHES to R'Lene Dahlberg, fellow teacher at Stuyvesant High School, friend, wife of author Edward Dahlberg, and muse. Mostly chatty correspondence, all but two pages handwritten by McCourt, complete with hand-addressed envelopes and mostly written in New York City. In one letter McCourt describes being at Rockaway Beach with his daughter Maggie who is searching for her lost hamster with a friend: "The little bugger won't come out. I've tempted him with everything from carrots to watercress. I've made assorted seductive noises. I've exposed mineself. I've even promised him a night out with a hamsteress. To no avail. Maggie & Clare are less interested in hamsters than in boys. It's all boys now. Boys, boys, boys. I'll break her face. She checks herself out in the mirror by the hour. I told her cut it out. She [sic] wearing out the mirror. Also, I'm getting an education in teeny bop mating…

New York: B. W. Huebsch, Inc., 1918. First Edition. Hardcover. Pencil name on front endpaper and pencil markings by titles of many poems; inch chip at base of spine with some loss. Very Good, lacking the scarce dustwrapper if there ever was one. Brown boards with gilt lettering on the front cover and spine. Her scarce first book. Ridge was an Irish-born New Zealand-American anarchist and modernist poet, and an influential editor of avant-garde, feminist, and Marxist publications. She was active in radical causes and was among those arrested for protesting against the executions of Sacco and Vanzetti in 1927. Her actions during the demonstration in front of the prison on the day Sacco and Vanzetti were executed were described by Katherine Anne Porter in her long essay, The Never Ending Wrong. Peter Quartermain described her in the DICTIONARY OF LITERARY BIOGRAPHY as the nearest prototype in her time of the proletarian poet of class conflict, voicing social protest or revolutionary idealism.
