Many lousy copies of these titles are available online, but few in the Near Fine condition of this volume. Contents clean and crisp, interesting old bookplate pasted over another interesting bookplate on the front pastedown; binding lovely with the spine darkened and minor wear along the joints, covers tight. Near Fine. Two octavo (4-3/4" x 7-3/4") volumes bound in one in early paneled calf leather with a gilt-lettered morocco spine label; [xxiv], 312; viii, iv, 138; [10] pages. The second volume has a frontispiece illustration of a battle. First title translated into English by J. Mitchell; the second translation not credited. Both of these titles by the French clergyman and historian first appeared in the last decade of the 17th century.

Small folio (7-1/4" x 11") in worn contemporary calf leather with a modern leather spine; vi, 147, [1] pages. First edition in English of a study of the geography, natural history, and inhabitants of Lapland, originally published in Latin the previous year. Cox I, 178; Wing S851. Illustrated with an engraved title page, a folding map, and 26 large woodcut text engravings, including the FIRST DEPICTION IN AN ENGLISH LANGUAGE BOOK OF A PERSON SKIING. Both covers bear the arms of Henry Yelverton (1664-1704), 15th Baron Grey de Ruthyn and Viscount de Longueville. Lapland is the least densely populated area of Finland. The Sami people, traditionally known in English as Lapps or Laplanders, are the northernmost indigenous people of Europe and are widely credited with being the inventors of the ski.

The text of a lecture on the exhibition Printing and the Mind of Man whose subject was the contribution of print to public debate as an essential preliminary to the formation of democratic public policy. This copy INSCRIBED by Carter on the front endpaper: "for E. A. Lowe/from the writer of the Preface/9 Sept. 64." There is also a signature of "John Carter" at the top of the front cover, but the handwriting does not completely resemble Carter's.

Bindings rubbed but the covers are tight. Very Good. Two quarto (7-3/4" x 10") volumes in contemporary tree calf leather with gilt-lettered red morocco spine labels. Illustrated with 16 engravings and a large folding map. Acerbi was an Italian naturalist and composer. His record of travels in Scandinavia describes the customs of the people and detailed observations on natural history. Much of the second volume concerns Lapland where he visited remote areas described here.
