Not only did he, together with his colleague Bram Fischer, teach law to Mandela, but he defended Mandela in the fifties (when Mandela was threatened with disbarment), once as Chairman of the Johannesburg Bar Council. Cleveringa was not only a Professor of Law at Leiden University, but he was also a Dutch Resistance hero during the Nazi Occupation. When he made a speech protesting at the dismissal of his Jewish peers, he was immediately arrested and imprisoned at Scheveningen, the so-called 'Orange Hotel' for the number of resistance fighters imprisoned there. He later, in another camp, helped coordinate the Resistance. After the war he was much rewarded for his contribution. In 2004 he was named 'The Greatest Person from Leiden University' by the university magazine. In 2015 his speech was declared the greatest in Dutch history. The book is sound, confident.
