Housed in publisher's illustrated envelope. A fine set, as new; the nicest we have seen! F. Winold Reiss (1886 - 1953) was a German-born American artist and graphic designer. The source for the 1954 Robert Aldrich movie, "Apache," with a blue-eyed Burt Lancaster portraying the title character and with Jean Peters, Charles Bronson and John McIntire. Here is the story of Massai, Apache warrior under Geronimo, who is on his way to Florida in the prison train after Geronimo's betrayal and surrender. Massai escapes from the train and eventually makes his way back to Arizona, where he is betrayed by one of his own people, is recaptured and sent back to the Florida prison where he kills his guards and escapes into the High Sierras.

SIGNED by Latta. 8vo. 209 pp. 34 photo-plates. Latta's business card as Director of the Kern County Museum laid in. Maroon half-leather spine over cloth boards with gilt lettering. A fine copy of this scarce limited edition. As told to F. F. Latta by 15 Native Americans. A Collection of California Indian Folklore Tales which were told during the long Winter evenings long before the White People came to California. Latta's first work to specifically focus on the Indians of the San Joaquin Valley, dealing with the culture of the more than 60 tribes that made up the Yokuts. Latta was a well known historian who in 1906, while still a student conducted his first interview. He later went around and found old timers still living and interviewed them about various historical people and incidents.
