Fourth Edition, Enlarged and Revised. 300 pages, illustrated with black and white drawings of orchid plants, and a diagram of an orchid house, index, and 24 unnumbered pages of illustrated advertisements for gardening, and horticultural supplies, good condition, original hardcover green cloth with representative orchid plant in gilt on the front cover, and title in gilt on spine (binding shows mild shelf wear at front hinge, and inside front and back gutters, small old wet spot in lower corner of back cover, corners slightly bumped - all not affecting contents).

A respected contribution to the understanding of orchids, and their propagation. Written during a heightened interest in these exotic plants; and still referred to today.

Small quarto (9 1/2 X 6 1/2 inches) San Francisco: Paul Elder, 1906. Original hard cover, thick green cloth binding, 72 unnumbered pages printed in two colors on watermarked deckle-edged paper.

Decorative black and white line drawings by Spencer Wright, in the margins surrounding the text, representing people working in gardens; Art nouveau image of a potted plant on cover - its tendrils reaching for the title in gilt, and repeated on spine.

Printed by the Tomoye Press, under the direction of Harry Nash; decorative end papers (small unobtrusive stamp of previous owner in margin of first fly leaf, and repeated in pencil on back of first fly leaf) good condition (minor age toning to covers and spine, not affecting contents which are clean).

A collection thoughts on gardens and gardening that includes quotations from Joseph Addison, Oliver Wendell Holmes, John Milton, Margaret Deland, John Keats, William Blake, and Shakespeare among many others, presented in an attractive format reflecting the period.
