Description:
16 mo. (6 3/4 by 4 1/2 inches) London: R. Baldwin in Warwick-lane, 1697. Original First Edition. 7 preliminary leaves, two volumes in one: 80, 392 pages; good condition: rebound in late eighteenth, or early nineteenth century brown mottled calf, with gilt decorated spine laid down, raised bands, (missing label), minor wear to covers at front hinge (not affecting contents), lacking frontis.

There are thiry-one letters are that supposedly give insight into secret diplomatic transactions between the English and French courts. "History of the Stuarts," is a perceptive contemporaneous account.

24 mo. (5 3/4 by 3 3/4 inches) London: Printed for William Leach at the crown in Cornhill, near the Stocks-Market, 1679. The Second Edition, with the Addition of several hundred Sentences.[14] 166 [1], good condition: later speckled calf, corners slightly bumped, red label in gilt on rebacked spine; hinges showing mild wear, but holding; old worming to margins of a few end leaves (not affecting text); bookplate on first fly leaf, inked name of previous owner dated 1893 on front paste down; old inked notes on back fly leaf; overall sound, and in good condition. ESTC R27673

Running headline: "A Poetical Sport." When the book is open, the verso of a previous page (i.e. on the left) contains the Latin expression, the English meaning is on the recto of the opposite page (i.e. on the right). An expression "He knows not a hawk from an handsaw," included on page 37, was used by Shakespeare in his play Hamlet.

Quarto (12 1/4 X 8 inches) England: Printed by Edward Jones in the Savoy, And Published by him and Randal Taylor near Stationers Hall, 1693. First Edition. 64 pages (pages 29-32 are misnumbered with no loss) containing testimony and the transcript of a sensational murder trial that later figured in Thackery's Henry Esmond; hardcover, bound in nineteenth century course grained half calf, with matching corners, and marbled paper over boards. Very good condition (showing normal shelf wear to corners and along spine), printed on wove paper (minor age blemishes to a few pages, not affecting text or contents), armorial bookplate.

A contemporary record of a murder trial, "... contain(ing) all the requisite elements to command attention: the death of a popular celebrity actor; the attempted kidnap of another; and the involvement of an underage member of the peerage .... "
