This 1925 first edition of "Porgy" from the Madison High School library of Madison, Florida, was purchased in the adjacent city of Greenville, the childhood home of Ray Charles. Book was the basis of Gershwin's 1935 opera "Porgy & Bess." Dog-eared by many student readers and well-read and completely legible and intact. Typical school library stamps, includes checkout card that ends circa 1967; removed from circulation most likely because of extensive use of the N-word by book characters, including black characters. An interesting copy with a deep South connection.

Clean copy of this reprint of Bronte's second novel originally published in 1849. Scarce in this unmarked condition. The novel is set against the backdrop of the Luddite uprisings in the Yorkshire textile industry. The novel's popularity led to Shirley's becoming a woman's name. The title character was given the name that her father had intended to give a son. Before the publication of the novel Shirley was an uncommon but distinctly male name. Today it is regarded as a distinctly female name.
