Gunnar Johansen Performs Busoni - Complete Piano Works, Album IV; An die Jugend & Fantasia Contrappuntistica [LP VINYL RECORD]

By Busoni, Ferruccio

Blue Mounds, Wisconsin: Artist Direct, 1953. This is Album IV of Gunnar Johansen's masterful traversal of Busoni's complete works for piano solo. REPERTOIRE: [1] An die Jugend (1909) is a set of 12 pieces reflecting Busoni's new (avant-garde for the time) creative thinking. [2] Fantasia Contrappuntistica (1910, Italian edition - a stunningly profound performance here) represents the culmination of Busoni's dedication to the music of J.S. Bach. It is truly a monumental piano work. The album contains an informative insert regarding the repertoire of Albums III, IV, and V. CONDITION: The LP - a living room recording, as are all of Johansen's recordings - is definitely not "high fidelity", and there is general light surface noise throughout, but without intrusive pops, skips, or snags. Its Good Plus jacket is solid, unmarked, and uncreased, with moderate edge- and corner-wear, tiny chips at the spine ends, and a tape-attached title label on the previously blank spine edge. This quite scarce LP is now in a new audiophile inner sleeve (replacing the plain original) and the entire album is nestled in a strong mylar outer sleeve. It will be cleaned again before being securely packed and promptly shipped, domestically (USA) and internationally.. LP Record in Jacket. Very Good/Good. 12.25" x 12.25". Music LP Record.

Arthur Dann [performs] Mozart Piano Solos [LP VINYL RECORD]

By Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus

Saukville, Wisconsin: Audiophile Records, Inc., 1958. AP-58 [Translucent Red Vinyl LP]. Pianist Arthur Dann (1913-1979) was a brilliant and versatile artist - master of the classical repertoire and a highly-regarded jazz musician, who served on the faculty of the Oberlin College Conservatory from 1937-77. REPERTOIRE: Sonata in D Major, K. 576; Fantasie in D minor, K. 397; Sonata in C Major, K. 330; Fantasie in C minor, K. 396. CONDITION: The LP is in Very Good condition after 60+ years, although there is light surface noise throughout (a bit more on the A Side). Its unmarked, uncreased jacket has moderate shelf-wear, particularly at the edges and corners, regrettably tape-repaired at the top and bottom. Additionally, there is a water-incursion stain (visible in one of my scan images) at the upper outer corner. This exceedingly rare LP is now in a new audiophile inner sleeve (replacing the plain paper original) and the entire album is nestled in a strong mylar outer sleeve. It will be cleaned again before being securely packed and promptly shipped, domestically (USA) and internationally.. First Edition. LP Record in Jacket. Very Good/Fair. 12.25" x 12.25". Music LP Record.

Yuji Takahashi [performs] New Music for Piano(s) [LP VINYL RECORD]

By Iannis Xenakis; Roger Reynolds; Yuji Takahashi; Earle Brown

USA: Mainstream Records, 1970. Mainstream MS/5000. Definitive recordings by one of the greatest performers of avant-garde piano music (and a gifted composer as well). REPERTOIRE: [Xenakis] Herma (1960-61, dedicated to Yuji Takahashi); [Reynolds] Fantasy for Pianist (1963-64); [Y. Takahashi] Metatheses (1968); [Brown] Corroboree (1963-64). CONDITION: The LP is remarkably quiet, showing a bit more surface noise (with occasional light pops and crackles) in the Xenakis track. I'm tempted to grade this copy as Very Good Plus but prefer to grade it more conservatively as VG. Its jacket is bright, solid, and unmarked, with moderate shelf-wear and a couple small areas where the clear lamination has loosened. The LP is now in a new audiophile inner sleeve (replacing the plain original) and the entire album is nestled in a strong mylar outer sleeve. It will be cleaned again before being securely packed and promptly shipped, domestically (USA) and internationally.. LP Record in Gatefold Jacket. Very Good/Very Good. 12.25" x 12.25". Canonic Variations, Interlude, and Fugue - on a Theme by Sergei Rachmaninov [PIANO SOLO SCORE]

By Sherwood, Gordon

Unpublished, 1974. A powerful large-scale piano work based on the Rachmaninov C#-minor Prelude by this unjustifiably/inexplicably-forgotten American composer. Gordon Sherwood (August 25, 1929 - May 2, 2013) was an American classical composer. Known in Germany as the "Beggar-Composer", his works exhibit various early 20th-century European and American classical music styles, as well as showing influences from blues, Arabic, Indian and Asian music. The New York Philharmonic under Dmitri Mitropoulos gave his career a promising start as a prize-winning young composer at Carnegie Hall in 1957. Aaron Copland said he was "his most gifted student". He studied with famous teachers and won more awards and stipends in academia, but drifted into virtual anonymity until the mid-1990s. He began begging on the streets of Paris around 1980. A 1994 Norddeutscher Rundfunk/Arte feature-length television documentary "Der Bettler von Paris" exposed his life and work to German audiences, who were the first to hear his symphony and other works were premiered and recorded at the beginning of the 21st century. 39 pages. CONDITION: A bright, uncreased Fine copy with negligible shelf-wear - the full score unmarked but for the previous owner's name on the cover - that of composer Noel Farrand, a fellow Copland student. This exceeding scarce composition is now in a clear, protective polypropylene bag with archival backing board.. Plastic Comb with Card Covers. Fine. 8.5" x 11.75". Music Score.

By Busoni, Ferruccio

New York: International Piano Archives - Desmar, 1976. IPA 104. A remarkable historical document of one of the greatest piano virtuosi of the late-19th-early-20th century (all of his non-player-piano-roll recordings), along with revelatory recordings by three of his outstanding students. CONDITION: Overall Very Good Minus record, I'd say, to be safe. The early 1920s recordings (Busoni and Zadora) have not been digitally "cleaned", so they retain the surface noise sound of their original 78 RPM records. The later Petri and Weiss recordings are somewhat cleaner, with general light-moderate surface noise, though toward the end of the Petri there is a recurring thump (resulting from a visible manufacturing flaw (bump). The Very Good jacket is bright, solid, unmarked, and uncreased, with light shelf-wear and ring-wear.The LP is now in a new audiophile inner sleeve (replacing the plain original) and the entire album is nestled in a strong mylar outer sleeve.
