An exceedingly rare late-19th-century edition of Lord Lytton's engaging 1834 novel, which culminates in the cataclysmic destruction of the city of Pompeii by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. 425 pages. Undated, but the Walker Street address indicated publication between 1894 and 1899. CONDITION: Good Plus. This beautifully-designed book - its boards now enfolded in a clear acetate cover - is still quite attractive, although its decoration, including the gilt-endowed spine, is somewhat faded. There is bumping to the outer corners and at the spine-ends. The front hinge is a bit loose but secure. Inside, the pages are age-tanned, and there is a gift inscription (in beautiful late-19th-century cursive) on the front free endpaper.
