BOO is FINE, unmarked, unread, AS NEW in AS NEW unclipped DJ. Gift quality. (h) Doesn't matter much whether you loved him or hated him -- he was a major influence in later 20th century American history, perhaps more influential with the people who hated him than the others. This is the first complete biography of the man, and filled with those things that were influential to him, not secret hidden facts as much as things most people never knew, such as his time as a cadet at West Point, and things he ACTUALLY did (as distinct from what newpspaper headlines said) such as his drug research studies at Harvard. He laughed a lot because he found so many things funny. For example, when he was sent to prison, and, as were all new prisoners, was given a psychological evaluation test to determine his sanity, it was a test he had written some years before, one that was still called "The Leary Test." For good or ill, and extraordinary man. (Signed copies also available)

(DJ is AS NEW but with one 1/64" dot on front cover.) (h) Cover is brick-brown woven cloth with vertical ripple on spine, as is characteristic of this edition. The Magnum Opus of one of the greatest -- if not THE greatest -- 20th Century American poet. 50 years in the creation. The man to whom James Joyce sent the first copy of Finnegans Wake, looking for his approval. (Difficult to say if he approved or not -- merely wrote "DECADENCE" across the title page, perhaps meaning he considered the work decadent or that he considered the subject to be society's decadence. Arguably one of the great minds of American literature, his affection for Mussolini and Fascism notwithstanding. This copy essentially AS NEW and of gift quality.

By Dorothy and Thomas Hoobler.

Boston: Back Bay Books, 2007. First Paperback Edition Pictorial Wraps FINE in WRAPS 8vo (5-1/2 x 8-1/4), 374 pp including Index and Reading Group Guide. In 1816, a few people had gathered at Lake Geneva for a weekend picnic and retreat -- but the weather was terrible and they stayed indoors. The poet Byron set up a contest -- who could write the best ghost story? Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin (later Mary Shelley) wrote "Frankenstein." Less well known is that Byron's physician, John Polidori, also wrote a book -- the first vampire novel. The Hooblers take us into that weekend of writers competing with and inspiring each other using letters and rarely seen archives.

By Singer, Lee.

Detroit: Five Star - Thomson/Gale, June 2007. First Edition, First Printing Glossy Pictorial Boards AS NEW in AS NEW DJ 8vo (6x9), 401 pp. Hardbound First edition is signed on the title page and is FINE -- unread, unmarked, and AS NEW in AS NEW glossy pictorial DJ.(h) This is a brilliant thriller about the Lake Tahoe region in the year 2066. The USA has fragmented into several countries, this one, where gambling continues to reign, is Sierra. But the future setting is merely a way to present an amazingly complex, totally contemporary fast-moving gritty story bfilled with surprises. Rica Marin is a mercenary, hired to go undercover in a casino as a lounge singer and find out if the really nasty criminal things people have said about this clan are true. But NOTHING is necessarily as it seems and no one knows who is actually on which side -- sort of a fast-moving chess game with all the pieces the same color. Rica Marin is a wonderful character -- had me head over heels from the start. I have to admit I have long enjoyed this writer's books, not only because they take place in the area where I live, but because the characters have real texture and the sort of idiosyncratic complexities that real humans have. Rica Marin is even more so. So I got hold of a couple copies, went to the author in Petaluma, asked her to sign them, and she was gracious enough to do that. Five Star printed very few copies of this book , so I think the first edition -- given how good it is -- will become very collectible, and those signed by the author even more so.
