London: printed by J.L. for Humphrey Moseley, 1656., 1656.. Good. - Small quarto, 7-1/4 inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide. Hardcover, bound in full contemporary brown calf. The leather covers are rubbed & scuffed with pieces chipped from the head & tail of the spine. Pages [i-xxxii], 1-274, 267-424, 427-482, 493-631, and [1-13]. Misnumbered but textually complete, with decorative head pieces & engraved initials and a full-page botanical illustration on page 313. Lacks the frontispiece, which is somewhat common with this book. There is some occasional minor foxing with some occasional staining. The front edges of the first few leaves are darkened & slightly chipped and there is a tiny piece out from the bottom edge of one leaf. The text block is cracking and a few signatures (i.e. group of pages) are lightly pulled. Good. Third edition.

Very good. - Over 40 words typed on 9-1/4 inch high by 7-3/4 inch wide "43 Exchange Place, New York" stationery with a black mourning border framing the top and side edges. Responding to the American impresario and lecture agent James B. Pond's invitation to join as a member of the reception committee welcoming Maurice Maeterlinck to America, August Belmont, Jr. replies that "I shall not be in New York the first part of January and regret, therefore, that I cannot serve on the Honorary Reception Committee to receive Maurice Maeterlinck. Signed "August Belmont". The last letter of Belmont's signature is smudged. Folded for mailing, the bottom edge is cropped, not affecting the text or signature and there is a small piece out from the top left corner.
