Brooklyn [NY]: J. W. Heighway, & Co., Printers, 1855.. 1855.. Good. - Octavo, softcover bound in printed tan wraps sewn with tan thread. The rear wrapper is lacking. The front wrap is darkened, stained & soiled with the corners creased & with small pieces out. The spine is perished & the wrap is partially detached. 31 pages & [2] leaves. There is staining & soiling to the rear blank & to the bottom corners of 2 leaves. The bottom corners of the first 3 leaves are creased. There is a light vertical crease to the front wrap & to each page of the pamphlet. Overall, the contents are good. <p>The Society was incorporated in April 1, 1854. Its offspring was the Hunt Horticultural and Botanical Garden, incorporated Aptril 9, 1855.<p>Rare. WorldCat locates only two copies.

There is some light creasing to the rear wrap & its front edge is chipped. 20 pages. There is light creasing to the leaves & stains to the front margins. The front edges of the last 2 leaves are chipped. Good. <p>Luther Burbank [1849-1926] was influenced by Darwin and became a market gardener in Santa Rosa, Calif. where he conducted plant breeding experiments for fifty years and produced many better varieties of cultivated plants.<p>This pamphlet is the seventh of a proposed series of fifteen monographs aiming "to create a general interest in agriculture, horticulture, and floriculture with instructions to make it possible for everybody to grow his or her own fruits, flowers, and vegetables." The contents include charts showing the best months to plant seeds in different areas of the U.S.

There is light soiling & staining to the rear panel. 127 pages plus 1-page publisher's catalog. Full-page & textual illustrations in black & white. Some page edges are darkened & the inner margins of the illustration pages are rippled. Good. <p>First edition. Scarce in the dust wrapper.

The binding is lightly rubbed with a few tiny white marks. The lower front edge of the front cover is lightly stained. The dust jacket is heavily chipped with short tears & pieces out. There is a large piece out of the rear panel & the bottom edge of the rear panel has been repaired with a strip of stiff green paper. 160 pages with an errata slip tipped in. The edges of the pastedowns & endpapers are darkened & there is light spotting to the title page. Black-and-white photographic illustrations & color plates, including a frontispiece, by William MacQuitty. Very good in a fair dust wrapper. <p>First American edition.
