Twenty-two stories, in Updike's eleventh collection. 8vo, Navy blue boards with usual Knopf gilt lettering, burgundy topstain, almost no visible wear, save sunning to exposed edges of boards. In unclipped DJ with slight wear and small pale tan stains to front panel and flap at top. Pages bright and unmarked. Two black marker dots to bottom edge as if remaindered, but this copy is also inscribed by the author on the ffep, "Dear Warner - You once said you liked these tales of reluctant but ineluctable aging, and here they are with admiration and affection, John." From the library of Prof. Warner Berthoff, whose nearly 50-year correspondence with Updike is held in the Updike Collection at the Houghton Library, Harvard U.

Name of former owner Prof. Warner Berthoff, date Sept. 1960, note "From the library of Dr [Samuel] Chew" (Bryn Mawr College) written on ffep, WBB's underscoring and notes in pencil throughout (in his small, neat hand, and quite interesting). Laid in 4"x6" postcard reproduction of Childe Hassam's "Boston Commons at Twilight," 1859.

Vol. 1 1058 pages (1-1/4" thick), Vol. 2 1250 pages (1-1/2" thick), with index of authors and titles in each, and with biographical and literary chronology for each author. First printing stated. Trade paperbacks, white parts of wraps lightly soiled. Vol. 1 selections range from John Smith to Walt Whitman. Text is clean, no markings observed. Vol. 2 ranges from Whitman to poets and critics of the 1960s. Vol. 2 has creases to corners; text mostly clean, with small amount of underscoring and marginal notes by former owner Prof. Warner Berthoff (observed on seven pages in the included story by Eudora Welty and one in the essay by Poirier). Two-volume set will incur shipping surcharge because of its weight.

"Compliments of Odyssey Press" label pasted on inside of front cover. Text clean and unmarked.

Doubleday Anchor Books, 1956. Soft cover. Fair. 320 pages. Selected and arranged with a preface by Willa Cather, this collection was first assembled in 1925, from stories written in the 1880s-1890s. Set in Maine. Mass-market paperback, worn wraps reglued along spine and mended with clear tape. This copy belonged to Prof. Warner Berthoff, who wrote "The Art of Jewett's Pointed Firs" (The New England Quarterly, March 1959); his marks and other marginalia are on approximately 25 pages of the Preface, "Pointed Firs", and one other story.

Gift inscription to a former owner handwritten on ffep, pages otherwise unmarked.
