Incredible 6 page manuscript letter from a Civil War Chaplain posted at Annapolis, discussing St. John's College Hospital Chapel, visiting hospitals, and the work of the U.S. Christian Commission in Annapolis during the war.<br /> <br /> Partial transcript: <br /> "At 2 P.M. I preached in St. Johns College Hospital Chapel & there visited some of the wards. In the evening we had preaching in the U.S.C.C. Chapel Tent [which is my headquarters] at College Green Barracks...Annapolis is, or course, a secesh town. The churches were nearly broken up by the war but now begin to look more flourishing. This was a handbook for newly arrived recruits at Camp McQuaide during World War II. Camp McQuaide was on the coast of the Monterey Bay just west of Watsonville, California, and home to the Coast Artillery Replacement Training Center from 1942-1943. <br /> <br /> This handbook contains information on the facilities and activities at the post as well as a section on "Amusements in Town." There is also a small pictorial map of the Monterey Bay Region and a centerfold map of the camp itself. A scarce handbook. <br /> <br /> The site of Camp McQuaide has been occupied by a boarding school since 1949. Monterey Bay Academy is an accredited co-educational high school operated by the Seventh-Day Adventist Church.

Washington: Mathew Brady, 1863. Mounted on a 2" x 4" card. Clear image with a few insignificant brown spots, slight rubs to edges of card. Signature is clear and bold.. Black and white photograph. Original albumen photographic profile vignette of a seated General Hooker, facing left. Imprint of Brady Studio, Washington, in bottom margin. Inscribed on back of the mount "Joseph Hooker / Maj. Genl." General Hooker's aggressive fighting in 1862 led Lincoln to place him in command of the Army of the Potomac in January of 1863. He was defeated by Lee at Chancellorsville, and replaced by General Meade just days before the Battle of Gettysburg. Hooker's legacy is somewhat tarnished by his reputation for drinking, gambling, and womanizing.

Some browning to endpapers from dust jacket flaps, along with some light browning to textblock edges. Jacket has minor extremity rubs and a couple of tiny chips at head of spine.. An indictment of what the author believed was America's woeful unpreparedness for World War I, followed by his solution--a program of Universal Military Training. Well documented, with a brief bibliography. Col. Jennings C. Wise was a graduate of Virginia Military Institute and author of "The Long Arm of Lee," etc. Foreword by Maj. Gen. Leonard Wood.

Overall clean and sound.. A vigorous account of the Chancellorsville Campaign in the spring of 1863. Yellow paper-covered boards with leather spine, which is titled and ruled in gilt. Minor extremity rubs and shallow bumps. Foxing throughout. Binding is sound. Bottom 1" to 1 3/4" of a rear blank leaf is lacking. Overall a very nice copy of this scarce manual.. Engravings. This manual is an early attempt to introduce a uniform system cavalry of exercise and movements for the U. S. military. Illustrated with eight copper-plate engravings. Includes significant instruction on swords.

Contemporaneous prior owner name in ink on front pastedown.. Fold-out plans, tables, photographs. Scarce, Confidential manual on the weaponry associated with U. S. Army aircraft and pilots in World War I. Sections on the Marlin, the Lewis, and the Vickers aircraft machine guns, synchronizing gears, machine gun sights, bombs, bomb-release mechanism, bomb sighting, ammunition, pyrotechnics, and small arms. Three fold-out plates, one of which is a detailed and colored schematic of the Lewis machine gun. Notice on the first page warns that this book "...is issued for the instruction and guidance of all concerned, and contains information of military importance, none of which may be copied, printed, or published, under any conditions." Only 16 copies located in OCLC as of 10/1/2019.

Jacket has slight edge wear.. Pulitzer Prize winning investigative reporter Sy Hersh tells the story of the origins and cover-up of this tragic incident in the Vietnam War. Hersh had many well-placed sources, and also combed the 25,000 pages of the Army's undisclosed Peers Report into the command responsibility for the massacre. <br /> <br /> Inscribed and signed by Hersh on front free endpaper in year of publication.

Light tanning to pamphlet, with an old pencil note below author's name and a faint water-tide mark at inner margin, and on title page. Very good to near fine overall.. Interesting and uncommon pamphlet published in Baltimore during the Civil War which is highly critical of Abraham Lincoln, New England, and Abolitionists. The author sees disunion and the Civil War as resulting from self-righteous New Englanders too aggressively pushing their agenda on the South. He claims that while Lincoln's words claimed to want the Union preserved, his policies forced the rift with the South.<br /> <br /> Ref. SABIN 36316.

Photographs inside are all in nice condition, with an occasional edge chip to scattered leaves but with no image loss.. Black and white photographs. Album commemorating the 1956 invasion of Cuba by revolutionaries under Fidel Castro in the yacht Granma. The album consists of individual photographs of the participants in the invasion, opening with the photographs of 27 men who were killed, labeling them martyrs. <br /> <br /> The album includes youthful photographs of Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, and Raul Castro as well as many others. An uncommon souvenir of the Cuban Revolution against the Batista government, which ultimately resulted in the establishment of a new government under Fidel Castro.

Naval Academy in 1860, served in the Civil War and several other naval operations in his lengthy career. He is best known as the controversial hero of the Battle of Santiago in the Spanish-American War. <br /> <br /> A lovely copy of this scarce edition limited to 100 copies. This is copy #46, signed by Schley on the limitation leaf, facing half title. Well illustrated.

An interesting and well-reasoned discourse on the state of the Civil War about a month after the Battle of Gettysburg, from the Union perspective. Rev. Smith concludes with answers to objections such as that the aim of the war had shifted from preservation of the Union to the abolishment of slavery, the use of black soldiers, etc. Quite scarce. There are a few tiny separations at fold intersections but no loss.. A rare seriocomic pictorial map of Europe at the outbreak of World War I. Likely designed in September 1914, after the German advance on Paris had been halted with the aid of the British at the battles of Mons and the Marne. The comedic depiction of the protagonist nations as dogs reflects the optimism of the British at this early stage of the conflict. The English bulldog, flanked by the French poodle, delivers a nasty bite to the nose of the pickelhaube-wearing German dachshund.<br /> <br /> This almost whimsical view of the war was of course short-lived. Soon Johnson, Riddle & Co. would be designing recruitment posters to attract volunteers into a war effort that had utterly lost the sense of playful optimism depicted here.<br /> <br /> A… Read More

Near fine overall.. John R. Kenly had just been admitted to the bar in Baltimore when the War with Mexico broke out. He raised a company of volunteers and led them into battle as a captain in the Baltimore-Washington Battalion. This is his excellent first-hand account of these experiences. <br /> <br /> Kenly would later serve in the Union army during the Civil War as a colonel in the 1st Regiment Maryland Volunteer Infantry.
