When Lee Israel's celebrated writing career took a sudden downturn she embarked on an astonishing one-woman forgery racket run out of her Upper West Side studio. Using old typewriters, she fabricated hundreds of letters from the likes of Dorothy Parker, Noël Coward, Edna Ferber, Lillian Hellman and others, skillfully imitating their individual voices and styles and then forging their autographs with a flourish. The 2018 film of the same name, starring Melissa McCarthy, is adapted from this memoir.
