His mentor, literary plantation owner Joseph Addison Turner, who published the newspaper The Countryman from his Turnwold Plantation near Eatonton, Georgia, managed to get Harris a deferment from service in the Confederate army, something of an historical question mark/sore point in Harris life. He is most famous for his Uncle Remus stories, which made him second only to his friend Mark Twain in popularity as an American writer at the turn of the 20th century.
