Text in German by Graf Bernstorff & C. W. Allers. An enormous volume describing (in German) various military and civilian vessels, sailors and the record of a Victorian era steamship voyage through the Suez Canal and out to German Samoa. Wonderful drawings illustrating all these things by Allers (1857-1915), who had served in the navy and was a naturalist artist of the "bourgeois experience." This volume appeared at the moment in history when Germany began its naval arms race with Great Britain that carried on down to the First World War.
