Five mimeographed stapled booklets, 26 x 18 cm, [26], [8], [50], [16], [24] pp (including wrappers) on folded sheets, 3 folding charts, text diagrams and tables, paper browning, some soiling and discolouration and occasional ink marking in the text, lower wrapper one booklet detached, but in still in sound condition. A set of unpublished mimeographed Japanese military documents containing detailed information about various parts of the Tapanuli Regency of Sumatra under Japanese occupation. The four separate volumes cover Tapanuli Regency in general, the town of Tarutun, Fort de Kock (Bukittingi) and the wider central west coast region of Sumatra. The volume on Tapanuli is dated August 1942, and the volume of Tarutun, October 1942, suggesting that these were compiled a few months after the Japanese invasion of Sumatra. 伊勢)度会郡山田.. 文久元[1861].. Black and white woodblock printed, accordion style binding, decorative paper wrappers. A Japanese lunisolar calendar 文久二年 (1862) published in 文久元年 (1861). Covers insect damaged and stained in places, a little loss along blank upper margin first and last leaf, light browning, otherwise very good. Text in Japanese. 29.1 x 20.4cm. An interesting old Japanese calendar showing 二十四節気 "24 solar terms" which correspond to the individual months and 五行 "Five Phases"(木 Wood, 火 Fire, 土 Earth, 金 Metal, and Water one of which correspond to a day. Each month is either 29 or 30 days. .

No date. (circa1900).. 11 original hand painted fan designs approximately 40 x 15cm laid down on archival sheets 51 x 38cm. Each design is unique, some are brightly coloured whilst others are more sombre and some have a lacquer or metallic overprinting and silver flecking. Each of the designs has been backed with Japanese paper. Undated and in very good condition apart from some very minor spotting to the backing sheets (not affecting the image) they appear to be early 1900s. The collection is housed in a custom-made clamshell case. The earliest recorded sighting of the Japanese fan was in the 6th century CE, where burial tombs were adorned with pictures of fans. Drawing on the fan began around the Heian period (794-4485) and became such a hit that laws were created to restrict their use to particular social classes. Volume I: [4pp] district list, 22 double page copper engraved maps of Kinai (Kyoto-Osaka region) and Tokaido (Tokyo-Kanto region), 2 double page in colour, 19 double page in black and white and one double page featuring 3 maps of island groups. Volume III: 27 double page maps, 3 in colour and 24 in black and white map of the San'indo (northern Chugoku region); San'yodo (southern Chugoku region) and Nankaid Chugoku region (Shikoku). Relief shown by hachures. Printed on folded double leaves. Bound accordion style, patterned paper covered boards. 26 x 17cm. Very nice clean volumes. Japanese text with Romanised titles on most maps and Romanised title on title page. The orientation of the maps vary. This atlas is surprisingly scarce. OCLC shows only one copy and even odd volumes are not often seen. A very nice example of late 19th century Japanese cartography. .

[Tokyo].: [山中市兵衛?].[Yamanaka Ichibee?].. [1878?].. Volumes 2, 3, 5-7 of 7 volumes, a Japanese edition of 18 Chinese histories classics spanning from pre-Qing to Song Dynasty. Originally edited by a Chinese scholar 曽先之 [Zeng Xianzhi] in Yuan Dynasty, it was later annotated by another Chinese scholar 陳殷 [Chen, Yin] in Ming Dynasty. This is Japanese edition compiled by 大賀富二 [Ōga Tomoji] has Japanese reading marks. Four-hole stab binding, double leaves oriental style, paper title label missing on volume 2, some marking covers particularly volumes 2 and 3, occasional worming, string volume 3 split but still holding, in good condition. 18.4 x 12.7cm. .

Very attractive decorative card covers a little worn at extremities but a very good copy. Loosely inserted are 2 striking luggage labels of the period advertising the Oriental Hotel in Dairen and the Kyoto-Hotel Japan. 19 x13cm. Detailed illustrated guidebook for travellers on the South Manchurian Railway, with numerous photos. It consists of the Darien-Hinking Line, the Mukden-Autung Line, the Ryojun, Yingkou, and Fushun Branch lines, the Chinhsien-Chengte line, the Harbin-Feian lines and many other minor lines. The guide offers travellers advice on notable local landmarks, local transport and also gives a brief history of the railway's construction. .

The Journal of the American Asiatic Association began in 1898, an American publication with the aim of promoting commerce and cultural exchange between the US and eastern Asia and Oceania. In 1917 Willard Straight, who had been involved in promoting American trade and investment in Korea and China since the turn of the century, and his wife, Dorothy Payne Whitney Straight, bought the magazine and renamed it Asia. Colour pictographic/pictorial map of Asia 23.2 x 30.1 cms, gilt double-rule border printed on a folding decorative menu card 32 x 50 cms (open), highlighted in gilt, text in English, French and Japanese, central fold, and (later) central vertical crease, in very good condition. Pan Am menu card for First Class passengers dubbed "The President Special", the deluxe cuisine by fabled Maxim's of Paris "Good food is the basis for true happiness". Passengers were feted with gourmet meals on bone china with silver cutlery. The witty pictorial cover-map of Asia was by French artist and commercial illustrator Jacques Liozu (1910-1974), also known for his larger scale maps. .
