Tom Klinger Publishing. Hardcover. New. Originally this line was the route of the Denver, South Park & Pacific Railroad. Reaching from Denver, Colorado along the South Platte River to the entrance of the South Platte Canon, the line went up the canon and over the mountains to reach a mining district known as the Mineral Belt. The DSP&P later became a subsidiary of the Colorado & Southern railroad. Today, only a small branch of the line south of downtown Denver remains in operation. The former grade in the greater Denver area has been lost to urban development. The Mineral Belt was an area of great mineral wealth, and the railroad was needed to haul the gold, silver, lead, molybdenum, tungsten, zinc, coal and other less valuable mineral deposits down out of the mountains. But this was not the only traffic on the line, lumber and cattle were also sources of traffic. This is the story of the last railroad along Clear Creek until the demise of the narrow gauge operations of the Colorado & Southern west of Denver, Colorado in the spring of 1941. The formation of this railroad began on paper in 1865. Through various corporations and name changes, eventually this narrow gauge line became part of the Colorado & Southern, a subsidiary of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy which in turn was controlled by the Hill Lines, the Great Northern and Northern Pacific Railways.
