Description:
The Garbely Publishing Company. Hardcover. New. This title is a limited printing. Less than 200 copies remain in stock. Don't miss your copy! Each of the 35 classes of cabooses from the predecessor railroads that made up Conrail are presented. Often prior paint schemes and then Conrail paint schemes are shown. There are usually 3-4 photographs representing each class. Some classes have floor diagrams as part of the short chapter. A table for each class shows which cabooses were on the the roster for April 1, 1976, June 6, 1981 and April 8, 1986. Conrail was formed just before the end of the caboose era which will make this title more interesting as the predecessor railroads of Conrail were from the caboose era. As with all early Conrail operations, the many paint schemes of the cabooses, cars and locomotives make for a great color book. Plus add in the roster of over 2,500 cabooses, this will be a great reference title, too. The Garbely Publishing Company has partnered with The Conrail HS to produce… Read More

This is another quality publication by Garbely Publishing and is a limited print run. There are many great photographs here and the color reproduction is excellent. The equipment roster part of the book is huge. Many interior photographs are included. For all 23 years of Conrail's tenure (1976-1999), the railroad maintained a fleet of specialized railcars and locomotives equipped to ""test the condition of [its] track, allow Conrail's management to inspect the right of way and facilities at the ground level, and show customers and potential customers exactly how their freight [would] move."" The specialized railcars in this fleet were split between Conrail's business train (often called the Office Car Special, or OCS) and the railroad's research and track department. Researchers Brock Kerchner and Wes Reminder have teamed up to author this title. This hardcover book,… Read More

Description:
The Garbely Publishing Company, 2023. Hardcover. New. Hardcover, limited edition, 450 pages, 11 x 8.5 in., B&W photographs and roster data. The famous run of the Stourbridge Lion in Honesdale, Pennsylvania on August 8, 1829, marked the first operation of a steam locomotive in North America. Its operator and owner, the Delaware & Hudson Canal Company, was only six years old at the time, but the beginning of steam railroading in the United States was just one of the D&H's lasting contributions to the railroad industry. Over the next 124 years, the D&H would construct its own steam locomotives, purchase some of the largest steam locomotives ever used on the east coast of the United States, and experiment with some of the most unique and innovative steam locomotive designs ever seen on American rails (including those with European-style headlights!). This book is laden with photographs, diagrams, specifications, and roster information for every one of the D&H's steam locomotives between 1828 and 1953 -… Read More

Description:
The Garbely Publishing Company. Softcover. New. The Pullman Company was a huge company with a long history and one book on the dining service isn't enough to cover the subject thoroughly. This book is a detailed outline of the service. Employee interviews, uniforms, settings, a sample of menus and recipes fill this 172-page book. Following up on his successful sleeping ""hotel"" cars of the 1860s, George Pullman invented the first railroad dining car, starting a century-long tradition of the Pullman Company providing its passengers with restaurant-quality meals on rails. This is the first telling of the story of Pullman's dining service, with colorful menus, tasteful china and silver, popular recipes, and extensive interviews with retired Pullman chefs and waiters who served opera singers, actors, businessmen, and even the President of the United States. Authors Mulligan, Tilp, and Zimmermann explore the history, equipment, food, and people that made this unique era of travel possible. Tilp also… Read More

Description:
The Garbely Publishing Company. Softcover. New. Softcover, 86 pages, 8.5 x 11 in., B&W and Color photographs and illustrations. In 1868, the Buffalo Creek Railroad was incorporated as the first terminal railroad in the United States. Designed to tap into the growing grain milling business and Lake Erie commercial traffic, this five-mile railroad, concentrated entirely in Buffalo, New York, became the busiest terminal railroad of its size by the early 20th century. Even though the railroads service became synonymous with Buffalo's grain milling and flour industry, it also served a significant amount of the chemical and oil business in the area. The railroad began to dieselize in the 1930s, completing the process in 1948. It was an all-ALCo road after 1956. This book covers the railroad's last 26 years of operations from 1950 to 1976 and its integration into Conrail. Additional chapters cover the detailed histories and dispositions of the railroad's fleet of diesel locomotives (primarily ALCo end-cab… Read More

Description:
The Garbely Publishing Company. Softcover. New. This book is a softcover, but printed on high-quality glossy paper. The photograph reproduction is very good. Some older photographs have been improved, but the originals were of marginal quality. ""The Heisler Locomotive, 1891-1941"" is the definitive history of the Heisler Locomotive Works of Erie, Pennsylvania, and the interesting and capable machines they produced. The smallest of the three major manufacturers of geared locomotives (Heisler, Lima, and Climax), Heisler constructed over 600 geared steam locomotives, more than 30 fire-less steam locomotives, and a single diesel-electric locomotive during its 50 years of production. This revised and updated edition of the classic 1982 book originally published by Benjamin F. G. Kline, Jr. is a collaborative effort between the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania and The Garbely Publishing Company. The book's original detailed builder's list and owner's index have both been updated and… Read More

The Garbely Publishing Company, 2023. Softcover. New. Softcover, 108 pages, 11 x 8.5 in., Black-and-White images. Frank Kyper, author of three earlier books on the East Broad Top, covers the reincarnation of the railroad in the 2020s. Description:
The Garbely Publishing Company. Spiral Bound. New. The Pennsylvania Railroad's dining cars were renowned for their service and food quality. The PRR's well-trained chefs and waiters provided some of the world's finest cuisine while rolling along the eastern seaboard's steel highways. The procedures and, more importantly, the recipes used to provide that service were compiled into a single volume for the staff's reference and guidance on board the train. This exact reprint of the PRR's Cooking and Service Instructions from April 1947 is a collaborative effort between the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania and The Garbely Publishing Company. From uniquely exotic 1940s recipes (like a chicken shortcake) to the exacting specifications for the PRR's famous club sandwich or renowned salad bowl, this book contains hundreds of recipes that were originally prepared aboard a PRR dining car, including sauces, salads, sandwiches, entrees, sides, and desserts. Simplicity was key aboard a rolling… Read More

Description:
The Garbely Publishing Company. Softcover. New. Softcover, 172 pages, standard landscape format, Color and B&W photographs. This title has many historical photographs which are B&W images. More recent times are in Color. The cover suggests quite a bit of scenes of street running, but that is not the case. These are short line railroads or rural branch lines that may or may not run along the edge of a road. Still, this is an interesting book on the rails less traveled. Accomplished railroad author Frank Kyper spent many of his formative years in towns and cities like this throughout Vermont and New Hampshire, spending the 1940s through the 1970s moving around the area with his family. His free time was spent exploring local railroads like the Springfield Terminal, Claremont & Concord, Montpelier & Barre, Clarendon & Pittsford, and even the Mount Washington Cog Railroad. His travels and interests in the region also put him in contact with the Rutland and the various branch lines of the Boston & Maine,… Read More

Description:
The Garbely Publishing Company. Softcover. New. Mount Union was the location of the interchange between the mighty Pennsylvania Railroad and the famous narrow-gauge line, the East Broad Top Railroad and Coal Company. But in addition to the East Broad Top, there were 3-ft. gauge tracks serving the brick manufacturers of Harbinson-Walker Refractories Company and General Refractories. Also, the Pennsylvania Railroad operated a tie treatment plant with its own 2-ft. gauge railroad. As the Pennsylvania Railroad relocated its mainline around the center of town and the tie plant and brick manufacturers have closed, Mount Union is not the railroad center it once was. This book is a history book with extensive text and many B&W photographs from the past up until the Conrail era to supplement the text. Contents: Mount Union...a Pulsating Railroad Town in 1906!, pp. 6-8, Introduction, pp. 9-18, Tracks from West to East, Tracks from West to South, pp. 19-60, Narrow Gauge Capital of the East, pp. 61-62, Two-Foot… Read More
