Apparently published as a soft cover and later bound in a very solid hard cover binding with the title and author listed on the spine.

Binding is worn with chips at top and bottome of the spine, a few spots, corners frayed. Interior is mostly clean with some minor writing and spotting. From hinge is cracked, but holding. Two book plates on the front paste down. A worn, but solid copy.

Three volumes in original period 3/4 vellum bindings with marbled boards, title and volume number in gilt on small red leather spine back strip. Bound by A. Cox 18 St. John St., Cambridge. Marbled boards are lightly rubbed, shelf wear, vellum in nice shape with very minor soiling. Interior of the three volumes are clean with the very mildest of foxing at a few end papers. Volume three includes the index of the three volumes and is dated August 1885. Charterhouse boarding school. An attractive, rare three volume set.

Binding is a library type binding, but this book has no library markings. The book is very clean and solid. A pencil note by a former owner on the front free end paper. A fairly scarce book both in the first edition and this reprint.

The front free end paper is missing. Book is solid, square, and tight. Pages are very clean. Published soon after annexation by the United States in 1897. A scarce copy.

Top edge gilt. Probably bound thus in the early 20th century. Interior of book is clean. A gift quality book.
