Description:
Ediciones Mexicanas, 1951. Cloth. Very Good +/Very Good. The 1951 1st edition, in both Spanish and English. Solid and VG+ (light creasing running toward the inner hinges) in a bright, VG example of the uncommon pictorial dustjacket, with light chipping --and several small closed tears-- along the top-edges, and very mild soiling to the panels. Tall quarto, crisp black-and-white plates. Introduction by the architect Enrique Yanez. (From Yanez's Introduction: "The present book is the first of a series in which it is proposed to show various aspects of our contemporary architecture. Most of the illustrations in this work have been taken from the material selected by the National Institute for Fine Arts for the First Exhibition of Contemporary Mexican Architecture. Both the exhibition and this book have the same object, and are the result of a logical desire that a movement we believe deserving of recognition should be better known. The houses here represented fall within the period 1930-1950, two… Read More

Description:
New York. Letters. Very Good. 3 signed, handwritten letters by leading late 19th-early 20th century American architect Charles C. Haight (1841-1917), who was responsible for much of the design of Columbia's previous campus (at Madison Ave. & 49th St. in NYC) and Yale's current campus. 2 of the letters are single page, the 3rd letter 2 pages. And 2 of the 3 are written on Charles Haight's personal staionary. All 3 letters are crisp and eminently legible, with a touch of staining and abrading at several spots. The letters date from 1873, 1876 and 1877.

Description:
New York, 1956. Letters. Near Fine. 3 typed, signed letters from the renowned architect Philip Johnson --all from 1956-- to NYU Professor Dora Wiebenson. Each letter measures 8 1/2" x 11", is written on his business stationary ("Philip Johnson Associates") and each includes its accompanying original envelope. The March 1956 letter has good content (discussing the "Cite Industrielle", a design conference at Harvard, etc.), the other 2 letters are shorter and more perfunctory. The March 1956 letter shows a bit of light staining along its margins (not at all affecting the text), the other 2 letters clean as could be. The 3 envelopes, all with their original postmarks, show some wear along the edges and, in one case, pencil notes --in an unknown hand--at the back of the envelope. A nice cache of mid-career Philip Johnson ephemera, showing both enthusiasm and generosity.

Description:
Charleston, MA, 1811. Full calf. Very Good. Daniel Raynerd. The very important 1811 "corrected and enlarged" 2nd edition of this early, seminal guidebook in American architecture. Authored by Asher Benjamin (1773-1845), considered one of the country's first great writers on architecture. Contains more plates (59) than the 1st edition (44), which was published 5 years earlier in 1806. The 59 copperplate engravings have here been carefully collated (for completeness and condition) and, as with the 1st edition, were executed by Daniel Raynerd. We note that in his 2 pg. Preface to this 1811 2nd edition, Benjamin states "Sixteen plates, whch were in the first edition, I have laid aside, and have added twenty nine new ones; which almost make this a new work". This copy remains solid and well-preserved, and presents very well. Bound in the publisher's original --or at the very least a contemporary-to-the-period-- full mottled calf. Red leather title label in gilt (very likely later) at the spine. Light,… Read More

Internally very clean, with no writing or markings to speak of and all 77 gravure plates in superb condition.
