Description:
Dunedin: Bishop's Court, 1876. Very good condition. A four page letter from the Anglican Bishop addressed to a "Dear Miss Yonge", possibly Charlotte Mary Yonge, the noted Victorian novelist, concerning a task the Bishop has asked her to undertake. The work he has requested seems to involve Bishop Palleson (who died in 1871), as Bishop Nevill refers to the possibility that "some ladies with whom dear Bp Palleson was acquainted to take up this work". If this help should not materialize, the Bishop mentions the possibility of traveling to England himself for an upcoming general meeting of Bishops. Nevill closes on a note of warning against exposing children to a Catholic education: "It is somewhat hard to see so large a number of our people incurring all the risk of sending their children to be taught at the schools of the Romish". He warns of a parent recently requesting aid in helping a daughter "who had adopted Romish error thro' love for her Romish teachers." During this time period Anglican… Read More

Paris, 1833. First edition. Black & white lithograph view of three maoris on hill overlooking a village and bay in distance. (Bay of Islands) 39.5 x 22 cms. Printed on grey tissue and applied to laid paper with wide margins and official blind tooled stamp below the title. Some light markings in margin o/w very good condition. Plate 55 from the official report of the voyage. "Voyage de la Corvette L'Astrolabe..." Under the comand of Jules Dumont D'Urville. New Zealand was a particular focus of the French expedition with 2 of the 5 volumes of the report dedicated to the discoveries there. It seems that this expedition was closely examining New Zealand as a possible French settlement by charting the coast as much as they did, a counter to Cook's surveys that made the British claim so strong.

Description:
Auckland, 1885. A large oblong albumen image of an early American importer of kerosene oil, which was not readily available at the time, to New Zealand. The image depicts 2 large buildings fronting a major street corner. The two story building at the left advertises kerosene oil on the front facade, and the one story warehouse building at the right, which encompasses the entire corner, advertises kauri gum. Three horse drawn carts laden with large boxes are waiting in the street. A further shop sign, Robt. Furness & Co is visible in the distance. Arnold, Cheney and Co was the agent for New Zealand of the Colonial Oil Co, formed in New York to supply New Zealand and Australian markets with oil. John Robert Hanna was born ca 1850 in Ireland and sailed on the clipper ship 'Ganges' arriving in Auckland in 1865. Hanna was first employed by Bartlett's studio, followed by Hemus and Hanna (until 1885); at this time he purchased, renovated and renamed Clarke Bros. studio. Description:
London: C. Buckton and sold by P. Elmsly, 1788. ARGUABLY ONE OF THE RAREST PUBLICATIONS ON COOK'S FIRST VOYAGE. This is the first scientific publication relating to Captain Cook's first voyage on HMS Endeavour (1768-1771) to the Pacific. Officially it was to observe the transit of Venus in the South Pacific but secretly it was to search for the mythical Southern Continent. In the process Cook became the first European to set foot on New Zealand and the east coast of New Holland or Australia. Of all the works associated with the First Voyage, this is one of the rarest. Only two examples of this work are recorded at auction on Rare Book Hub since 1985. It was not in the Parks collection, arguably one of the finest in living memory on the works of Cook. It was also not in the libraries of Davidson or Parson's. It includes two large charts representing the east coast of Australia and New Zealand, much improved from those published in John Hawkesworth's official account of the first voyage. Wonderful photograph album of Victoria, New South Wales, and Tasmania, with large photographs and manuscript titles. A total of 47 photos, with 33 of Victoria, 6 of New South Wales, 5 of Tasmania, 1 of New Zealand, and 2 others. Each photograph is lightly tipped on to the album paper, with blank verso. Most of the photographs are by an unknown photographer; there are also some signed by J.W. Beattie, Thomas Foster Chuck, Frank Arnold Coxhead, C. Rudd, and J.P., possibly John Paine. One of the most striking & largest photograph is of "Aboriginals of Lake Tyers". It is an outdoor view of a family group of aborigines, from children to grand parents, dressed in western clothing, with spear, boomerangs and lean-to behind them. Others include some rather poetic views of woodcutters at Black Spur & Fernshaw; a couple of gold mining at Bendigo including Garden Gully United Gold Mining Company, with houses in fore and background.
