Sutro (1869-1945), was a prominent San Francisco attorney, well-known book collector, and President of the Book Club of California. The charming illustrations are printed in a single color with the animals and scenery defined sometimes by the color, and also by the absence of color. It includes one of a kangaroo "Kangaroo," cried Missus Kangie, "Please cast off that painful grouch, All our baby kangaroosies Now are snuggled in my pouch." Other animals include bees, an owl, elephants, goats, tigers, and sheep. Germany, 1890. Very good condition. Charming children's picture blocks with color animal pictures. The chromolithographic illustrations mounted on wooden blocks, depicting various animals, including a kangaroo. Each animal block has descriptive text on the verso. The text for the kangaroo reads, "The Kangaroo comes from Australia. By the help of its tail and enormous hind legs it is able to escape by terrific bounds when pursued". With six columns and four rows, for a total of 24 animal blocks. The illustration of the dog is the German spitz; other animals include the antelope, camel, bison, duck, elephant, flamingo, goat, hippo, ibis, jaguar, lion, monkey, newt, ostrich, porcupine, quail, rhino, tiger, underwing moth, vulture, wolf and zebra. In the original box, with chromolithographic illustration of lions in front of a cave, and 'Germany' stamped at the lower right corner. Edges of box slightly rubbed, a few splits.

With a kangaroo mother with joey for the letter "K", and quite a few other exotic animals, including the panther from Robinson Crusoe known as "Xury's Lion". Other animals used to illustrate the letters of the alphabet include: the Ichneumon (northern African mongoose), the jackal, lion, Nyl-Ghau (the largest Asian antelope), the ourang-outang, pig, quagga (an extinct South African zebra), rabbits, squirrels, tiger, urus (Germanic name for wild ox), vampyre (sic), wolf, Xury's-lion (sic), yak, and zebra.
