San Francisco: Adam Smart and Company, 1936. Paperback. Very good overall. A sweet illustrated, signed presentation copy of rhyming children's book by Alfred Sutro a.k.a. Adam Smart. Sutro (1869-1945), was a prominent San Francisco attorney, well-known book collector, and President of the Book Club of California. The charming illustrations are printed in a single color with the animals and scenery defined sometimes by the color, and also by the absence of color. It includes one of a kangaroo "Kangaroo," cried Missus Kangie, "Please cast off that painful grouch, All our baby kangaroosies Now are snuggled in my pouch." Other animals include bees, an owl, elephants, goats, tigers, and sheep. A copiously illustrated advance courier for the Great Cole Brothers' Circus, with many attractions, including a miniature kangaroo, which is described as "Mite, the Infant Kangaroo, Which is Smaller than a Mouse..." Also listed are the bicycle daredevil M.lle D'Zizi, a blood sweating behemoth (a hippopotamus), black tigers, triple zoological gardens, Fosse's educated pigs and turkeys, and Kane's Arabian stallions. This colorful copy has the rubber stamp of Rutland in the lower margin, "Thursday Aug '20". Folio, 16pp, profusely illustrated, with double page chromolithographed central illustration of the big ring, with elephants and horses in the foreground, bicycles and acrobats in the middle ground, and camels and trick dogs in the background. Chromolithographed decorations and illustrations to front and rear covers. Staple bound. Two gentle horizontal creases, location stamp at foot of front cover, o/w very good.

Pike, including one showing an indignant kangaroo in yellow trousers exclaiming "Fancy not knowing what shops are for" said the kangaroo scornfully (p15). Small 8vo, 48pp, color ills throughout. Pictorial paper wraps, full color illustration, with title in white on red ground at front cover. With red pictorial dj. Holes caused by insect damage at front cover, affecting dj only. Staple bound. Germany, 1890. Very good condition. Charming children's picture blocks with color animal pictures. The chromolithographic illustrations mounted on wooden blocks, depicting various animals, including a kangaroo. Each animal block has descriptive text on the verso. The text for the kangaroo reads, "The Kangaroo comes from Australia. By the help of its tail and enormous hind legs it is able to escape by terrific bounds when pursued". With six columns and four rows, for a total of 24 animal blocks. The illustration of the dog is the German spitz; other animals include the antelope, camel, bison, duck, elephant, flamingo, goat, hippo, ibis, jaguar, lion, monkey, newt, ostrich, porcupine, quail, rhino, tiger, underwing moth, vulture, wolf and zebra. In the original box, with chromolithographic illustration of lions in front of a cave, and 'Germany' stamped at the lower right corner. Edges of box slightly rubbed, a few splits.

Crossett, and for sale in Boston at 59 Lincoln Street. Large 4to, pp 1905 - 1980. Red illustrated paper wrappers, two small chips at right edge front cover, marginal water stain along top right margins and a smaller one mid-binding side, a bit dusty.

At p76 is 'The Australian Boy' with an illustration of a reclining boy dressed in a toga style garment, with a wreath of leaves on his head, and the following description, "There are people in the world who not only eat cats, rats, snakes, toads, and other animals without being cooked, but human flesh!". Also includes "The Tea Table" ("How nice it is to have the tea ready when we come home!"), Hawaii (the "Sandwich Islands", with illustration of American sailors offering a gift of a hat to a Hawaiian chief), and missions ("Our Island Home": "Here the friendly people come every Sabbath, and we teach them from the Bible"). 16mo, color lithograph frontispiece, 96pp, b&w ills. French children's strip puzzle, a "Jeu de Baguette", with scenes of life from 4 countries around the world on separate chromolithographed illustrated sheets; the puzzle itself on illustrated strips, which must be rotated to assemble the scenes illustrated on each of the sheets. A period paper label on the top cover with manuscript ink inscription, "Jeu de Baguette", and the dimensions. Produced in France around 1860, with French title at top of box cover and French subtitles on each illustration. In its original cardboard box with the color illustration 'Les Australiens' on the front cover laid down, within a blue and white flowered cloth ribbon border. The box cover illustration depicts a successful kangaroo hunt by aborigines, with three hunters (one with boomerang) bearing a kangaroo and possum across their shoulders on sapling poles, to an eagerly waiting family group in a lean to at the right. Philadelphia: Joseph Lyons, 1854. Wraps. Good +. Unusual child's picture book with each letter of the alphabet accompanied by an animal wood cut illustration, each on a blank backed page. With a kangaroo mother with joey for the letter "K", and quite a few other exotic animals, including the panther from Robinson Crusoe known as "Xury's Lion". Other animals used to illustrate the letters of the alphabet include: the Ichneumon (northern African mongoose), the jackal, lion, Nyl-Ghau (the largest Asian antelope), the ourang-outang, pig, quagga (an extinct South African zebra), rabbits, squirrels, tiger, urus (Germanic name for wild ox), vampyre (sic), wolf, Xury's-lion (sic), yak, and zebra. Xury's lion is a reference to an animal in 'Robinson Crusoe'; actually a panther, it refers to the animal which frightened the slave boy Xury and which was shot by Crusoe. Nine animals are pictured and described, including the Kangaroo at page 8, "The kangaroo is found only in Australia. There are thirty varieties. The mother kangaroo carries her babies in a pouch. The kangaroo has very large hind legs and can jump 15 or 20 feet. On open ground, he can outrun the fleetest dog. The opossum, his little cousin, lives in the United States". Children taking part in the contest are instructed to find the hidden animal illustrated on each page in order to win a free bottle of California Syrup of Figs and Elixir of Senna, "a pleasant, mild and dependable Laxative which may be safely given to babies and children of all ages" (inside front wrapper). Erlangen, Germany: Wolfgang Walther, 1778. First printing. Print. Fine. A handsome representation of the kangaroo based on Stubbs image from Cook's first voyage. This German representation was published in 1778, just five years after Cook's account of the first voyage was published. Copper engraving with period hand coloring, published in the German naturalist Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber's 'Die Saugthiere in Abbildungen nach der Natur mit Beschreibungen' ('Mammals Illustrated after Nature with Descriptions'). Watermarked, laid paper, 9 x 6.9" (plate mark). A noble looking fellow.

An instructional board to be hung in front of the class (still with the original hanging cord) with 2 engraved plates from the 'Dictionnaire Universelle d'Histoire Naturelle', showing two marsupials, the "kangurus dorsalis; Halmaturus dorsalis, Gray" which is the Black-striped wallaby; and the "Kangurus laniger, Quoy et Gaim; Macropus Laniger, Gould", the great red kangaroo. Geoffroy Saint Hilaire (1772 - 1844) was a French naturalist who with his colleague Jean-Baptiste Lamarck explained evolutionary theories. The two plates, numbered at the upper right, are Plates 18 and 19 of Mammiferes, "1ere Serie: Quadripede a Os Marsupiaux (Is. G. St. Hil); 2eme ordre Marsupiaux, Frugivores".
