Description:
Southbridge, MA: Printed by the Author, 1859. First edition. An autobiographical account of the author's early life on whaling vessels, shipping out of Fairhaven, Massachusetts as a cabin boy on the whale ship Leonidas, the captain Cape Codman. The narrative was prized by Franklin Roosevelt- his personal copy was inscribed "Franklin D. Roosevelt/ Hyde Park/ 1927. Very rare [underlined]." The New Bedford Whaling Museum cites this as a "short, easy, engaging memoir". He was also aboard the Copia and the Bowditch and spent time ashore on Hilo. The author's early life was spent in Worcester, Mass, born in 1834. In his whaling travels he visited St. Paul's, Isle Bourbon, Haiti, Juan Fernandez Isles, Hawaii (the Big Island and Oahu, dining with the Hawaiian king at one point) , up to the Arctic to the coast of Kamschatka at Cape St. Thadeus, Hong Kong, Marquesa Islands, Finland. A chatty account, including a description of cannibalism among natives of some Pacific islands. He eventually returned to…

Description:
London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1811. Print. Overall very good condition. Cooke's version is after an engraving from a drawing by John Webber in 1779 from "A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean." Captain James Cook [1782 - 1779] made three voyages to the Pacific and encountered Pacific cultures for the first time, but also brought back to Europe the first large-scale collection of Pacific objects. John Webber was the artist on Cook's third voyage 1776-1780. This image most likely is part of a ceremony when Cook was greeted in Hawaii. From "Scenery of the East India Islands, Etc." Copper engraving, 8.25 x 11", with stain in lower right corner not affecting image.

Description:
London: J. K. Sherwin, 1784. A fine, crisp impression. A fine copy of the second issue of Cook's famous portrait after Nathaniel Dance, beautifully engraved by J. K. Sherwin. This impression was published in London 1st August 1784, (the 1st was published April 20th 1779). This portrait was issued in 1784, at a time when portraits of Cook were in tremendous demand. Crisp dark three-quarter image of Cook seated with a map of the Southern Ocean on his knee, resting against the table, with "New Holland" barely legible on the map. This famous portrait of Cook was painted by Dance in May 1776, prior to Cook's departure on his 3rd & final voyage. The artist was one of the leading portrait painters of the day. It was said by David Samwell (1751-98) fellow voyager with Cook and ship's surgeon on the Discovery, that "It ... is a most excellent Likeness to Capt. Cook; and more to be valued, as it is the only one I have seen that bears any resemblance to him." Most of the busts and statues that were executed…

Paris, 1834. Very good condition. Hawaiian Islands 1834 from the Voyages of Dumont D'Urville. Depicts Nihau, Tauai, Oahou, Morokai, Ranai, Mawi, Tahou Rawe and Hawaii. Inset of the Ile de Oahou. Engraved by Ambroise Tardieu. Dumont d'Urville circumnavigated the globe for the second time between 1826 and 1829. On this expedition his accomplishments included significant Pacific discoveries. His records were so detailed that for the first time the scattered islands of the South Pacific could be divided into three major groups: Melanesia, Polynesia and Micronesia. Jules Sebastien Cesar Dumont D'Urville (1790 -- 1842) was a French explorer and naval officer who explored the south and western Pacific, Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica. As a botanist and cartographer he gave his name to several seaweeds, plants and shrubs, and places including d'Urville Island in New Zealand. 13 x 9", original folds, very slt. fox spotting outer edge.

London: W. Byrne, No. 79 Titchfield Street & J. Webber, No. 312 Oxford St., 1784. First printing. Print. Very good condition. The separately published image by Webber of one of the iconic images of the 18th century. Cook, already a successful navigator, was immortalized after his death at the hands of Hawaiian natives at Karakakoa Bay. Cook had spent two months on the Big Island in 1779 and was well received, the natives believing he was a god. When he was forced to return due to a damaged mast, he was viewed as a mortal who had already sorely stretched the supplies of the Hawaiians. It is also thought that his handling of the natives was uncharacteristically brusque, leading to conjecture that this consummate traveler's judgment was somehow impaired. Copper engraving, published as the Act Directs 1st Jan. 1784, by J. Webber, No. 312, Oxford Street, and W. Byrne, No. 19, Titchfield Street, London. 22 3/4 x 18 1/4" image size. Description:
London: G. Carter, 1784. Proof. A notable rarity in a proof edition with scratched text below the image, after letters of the most beautiful depiction of the death of Captain James Cook. The artist, George Carter, was not an eyewitness to the events in Hawaii, but his imagery and care in reconstructing the event places it as the most moving depiction of the event. Long a regular exhibitor at the Royal Academy and an accomplished portrait and historical painter, the tragedy of Cook's death on 14 February 1779 was an ideal subject for his talents. His depiction is vivid, showing Cook standing on the shoreline facing his attackers, holding his rifle as a club. The detailed portraits of the Hawaiians and the English seaman are done with great intensity and variety and number more than 30 individuals. In this effort, he was aided by John Hall, who engraved the portrait of Cook, and the other figures were engraved by I. Thornthwaite. The landscape was engraved by S. Smith. Carter painted the image in…
