Description:
St. Augustine, FL, 1880. Very good condition. Advertisment flyer for Florida plants and ferns, by Mary C. Reynolds. In the flyer dated June 5th 1880, Mary Reynolds writes that she is traveling to the north for a summer vacation and therefore will sell her botanical specimens at "unusually low prices". One of the plants listed, Baptisia Calycosa, Canby, is a rare member of the bean family, found in only 2 Florida counties, collected by Reynolds herself near St. Augustine, and not seen in the wild since 1940. Reynolds also collected plants which were included in the North American Herbarium at the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences. Reynolds goes on to note in the flyer that her ferns are "fine botanical specimens; Pteris aquilina, is represented by sections of the giant fronds of that species collected by F. W. White on the Indian River and reported by Mr. Davenport in the Botanical Gazette". Two lists of plants, the second list titled 'Florida Filices'. Folded, 5 1/2 x 7", printed on three sides.

London, 1806. Stunning original mezzotint & colored stipple aquatint of allegorical figures paying homage to a bust of the famed scientist, Carl Linnaeus, famous for his work in taxonomy, the science of identifying, naming and classifying organisms, particularly plants. The richly colored print was produced through an elaborate engraving technique using mezzotint, aquatint, etching and line engraving on a single plate. It is from one of the most admired flower books ever assembled, Thornton's "The Temple of Flora". Linnaeus is honored by, from left, Asclepius (god of medicine), Cupid (god of desire, winged infant seated in foreground), Flora (goddess of flowers and a symbol of nature), and Ceres (goddess of agriculture). Flora offers a garland of flowers, Ceres crowns the bust with a golden wreath, and an additional winged cupid sprinkles flowers from a cloud above the bust. From Thornton's renowned "Temple of Flora", the third and final part of Robert Thornton's 'New illustration of the sexual…

Description:
1845. Very good overall. Reverse painting on mica of a distinctive brown and yellow bird perched on a bough, a landscape with pond in the background. "Mica is a transparent mineral composed of complex mixtures of potassium silicates and often used in the mid-19th century by Indian artists, typically in standard sets for the colonial tourist market. Mica is formed between strata of granite and the transparency of the material is a result of the heat and pressure created between the layers of rock during formation. Mica consists of many interlocking platelets, resulting in a laminar structure which can be split easily into thin sheets. Mica presents many problems as a support for painting on due to the smooth surface as this provides very little key for the paint to adhere to. Popular subject matter included Hindu gods and goddesses, religious events, trades-people and flora and fauna of the sub-continent." (Victoria and Albert Museum, London). Approx 4 1/2 by 6 1/2. Printed in color and finished by hand, from Dr. Thornton's landmark work the "Temple of Flora", the greatest English color plate flower book.
