Southbridge, MA: Printed by the Author, 1859. First edition. An autobiographical account of the author's early life on whaling vessels, shipping out of Fairhaven, Massachusetts as a cabin boy on the whale ship Leonidas, the captain Cape Codman. The narrative was prized by Franklin Roosevelt- his personal copy was inscribed "Franklin D. Roosevelt/ Hyde Park/ 1927. Very rare [underlined]." The New Bedford Whaling Museum cites this as a "short, easy, engaging memoir". He was also aboard the Copia and the Bowditch and spent time ashore on Hilo. The author's early life was spent in Worcester, Mass, born in 1834. In his whaling travels he visited St. Paul's, Isle Bourbon, Haiti, Juan Fernandez Isles, Hawaii (the Big Island and Oahu, dining with the Hawaiian king at one point) , up to the Arctic to the coast of Kamschatka at Cape St. Thadeus, Hong Kong, Marquesa Islands, Finland. Paris, 1898. The caption on the front of the card reads "Cette caisse d'alcool de Menthe de Ricqles nous sera d'un precieux secours pour supporter les rigueurs de ce pays," which translates roughly as "This case of medicinal mint spirit by Ricqles will be an invaluable to us against the rigors of this country." Ricqlès Alcool de Menthe was a brand of peppermint water created in 1838 by the pharmacist Henri de Ricqlès. Like many products of its time, it had miracle qualities including as an antiseptic as well as for treating indigestion, bad breath, colds, flus, headaches, stomach pains, muscle ache, nausea and seasickness. It also was useful, apparently, while exploring the Arctic. The verso contains more information about the product and the many gold medals it had won for quality. Approx. 4 1/4 x 3 1/4"

Bertram (1911-2001) who served as a biologist on several expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctica in the 1930s and later became director of the Scott Polar Research Institute and secretary of the Eugenics Society. His first book, published in 1939, was Artic & Antarctic: A Prospect of the Polar Regions. Signed by author on title page. Laid in with handwritten note to Alan Cooke, editor of Arcana Poli: A Journal of Commentary and Opinion," seeking review. From the Telegraph, 2001: "COLIN BERTRAM, who has died aged 89, sailed across both polar circles in his early twenties, and conducted zoological research in all seven continents; he was also director of the Scott Polar Research Institute, Cambridge, and honorary secretary of the Royal Geographical Society. Boston: Littell & Gay, later Littell, Son & Company, 1860. Hardcover. Very good overall. Interesting content on 'An Arctic Boat Journey', by Isaac Hayes, the account of the Arctic search mission for the lost Frankliln expedition; also China (the Bruce War and rejection of the ultimatum); and oil in Pennsylvania (good times for whales). Littell's Living Age was a magazine that comprised sophisticated selections from various British and American magazines and newspapers, a "Reader's Digest" of it's day. It was generally published on a weekly basis for almost a century, from 1844 to 1941. It was also often the first US publication of serialized stories by important mid-19th century authors such as Trollope. 8vo, approximately 800 pp, bound in original pebbled black morocco with brown boards, gilt title & decoration on raised bands. Generally a little rubbed, small perforation one inch from base of spine. Internally, pages 3 to 26 excised; pp27-30 loose but present.

Dunk (b1855), celebrated Philadelphia painter and illustrator is the illustrator of this handsome work, with 6 full-page color illustrations and b&w illustrations in the text including one of a kangaroo with her joeys being menaced by a man on horseback with a raised whip, for which the original artwork is present, a large dramatic pen and ink sketch. In the distance across the wheat field two other riders and a dog race toward the kangaroo. 17 3/4 x 14" . 4to pamphlet with color cover illustration polar bear hunting in the Arctic, unpaginated (14pp) with b&w illustrations. Covers slt. worn, with a bit of rubbing and faint creasing, but acceptably so. London: Boy's Own Paper Office, 1889. Hardcover. Very good condition. With the 1st English publication of the story by Verne "Adrift in the Pacific" and "A Marvellous Conquest; A Story of the Bayouda" by Laurie. The Boy's Own Annual is a rather splendid production with woodcuts and attractive chromolitho plates throughout. Some of the boys' papers were early publishers of authors who went on to fame like Upton Sinclair. According to the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (online post August 11, 2018), W.S. Hayward's novel "Up n the Air and Down in the Sea" was serialized 1863-1865. Laurie's book was published in 1888 and the translation serialized a year later in this volume.
