Description:
Southbridge, MA: Printed by the Author, 1859. First edition. An autobiographical account of the author's early life on whaling vessels, shipping out of Fairhaven, Massachusetts as a cabin boy on the whale ship Leonidas, the captain Cape Codman. The narrative was prized by Franklin Roosevelt- his personal copy was inscribed "Franklin D. Roosevelt/ Hyde Park/ 1927. Very rare [underlined]." The New Bedford Whaling Museum cites this as a "short, easy, engaging memoir". He was also aboard the Copia and the Bowditch and spent time ashore on Hilo. The author's early life was spent in Worcester, Mass, born in 1834. In his whaling travels he visited St. Paul's, Isle Bourbon, Haiti, Juan Fernandez Isles, Hawaii (the Big Island and Oahu, dining with the Hawaiian king at one point) , up to the Arctic to the coast of Kamschatka at Cape St. Thadeus, Hong Kong, Marquesa Islands, Finland. A chatty account, including a description of cannibalism among natives of some Pacific islands. He eventually returned to…

Description:
Paris, 1898. The caption on the front of the card reads "Cette caisse d'alcool de Menthe de Ricqles nous sera d'un precieux secours pour supporter les rigueurs de ce pays," which translates roughly as "This case of medicinal mint spirit by Ricqles will be an invaluable to us against the rigors of this country." Ricqlès Alcool de Menthe was a brand of peppermint water created in 1838 by the pharmacist Henri de Ricqlès. Like many products of its time, it had miracle qualities including as an antiseptic as well as for treating indigestion, bad breath, colds, flus, headaches, stomach pains, muscle ache, nausea and seasickness. It also was useful, apparently, while exploring the Arctic. The verso contains more information about the product and the many gold medals it had won for quality. Approx. 4 1/4 x 3 1/4"

New York: Knickerbocker Press, 1925. First printing. Pamphlet. Very good condition. Exhibition catalogue. Insciribed to Percy and Marion MacKaye with affectionate wishes - F.W. Stokes. August 24, 1934. "The Power of the Impossible. The Life Story of Percy & Marion MacKaye", by Arvia MacKaye Ege. MacKaye wrote plays throughout the early part of the 20th century, in a somewhat anti-modernist view. Intensely concerned with the Spirit of America, Percy MacKaye was highly acclaimed before the age of film and electronic media as the inspired leader of the civic drama... At times, thousands filled his stages. Such community-participation masques uplifted drama to new levels, and became uniquely American cultural events. OCLC: 13634867 Endorsers of Mr. Stokes' Works include Captain Roald Amundsen, Gen. A.W. Greely, Sir Ernest Shackleton, Commander Edward M. Evans, John Singer Sargent, David Chester French, Joseph Pennel, Henry Fairfield Osborn. Listing of 170 oil paintings, oil sketches, pastels and black…
